Balkan Fact File

What's the Best Month to Visit the Balkans?
We recommend visiting the Balkans between March and June or September to November. Thanks to its mountainous landscape, the Balkans attract both hikers and winter sports enthusiasts. In summer, ski lifts often double as cable-cars to reach scenic hiking trails. The region benefits from pleasant temperatures during spring and autumn, and our trips to the Balkans start as early as March and run right through to November. If you prefer milder weather, we advise avoiding the peak summer months of July and August, when prices may also be higher.
What's Special About the Balkan Countries?
With several of the western Balkan states encompassing part of former Yugoslavia, the region has a rich history. The Byzantine, Ottoman and Roman Empires have all influenced the region, and much of the architecture reflects this.
Notable events in the Balkans include the region's involvement in World War II and the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, which is widely considered to have sparked World War I. Any walker with a fondness for history will enjoy visiting the Balkans.
Whilst some countries in the Balkans receive more visitors than others, many of the Balkan states are off-the-beaten-track, still recovering from the Balkan War and in the infancy of tourism development - making it the perfect option for tourists who seek novelty and authenticity.
The Balkans region is a popular destination for walking holidays, offering a unique blend of nature, culture, and history. Natural highlights abound in the region, with its rich tapestry of mountains, seas, valleys, lake, wetlands and rivers adorning the horizon. It has a 3,600 kilometre long Adriatic Sea coastline in Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania, and its location in the European continent make it a popular stopover for migrating bird species.
Where's the Best Hiking on the Balkans?
There are over 50 national parks in the Balkan Peninsula, and hiking is an extremely popular activity. As such, the region caters to hikers and other adventurous tourists. There are several well-known hiking tracks crisscrossing the region, with some involving border crossings, such as the Via Dinarica trail or our Balkan Peaks Border Trek holiday.
