Walk in the heart of the Slovenian Alps on this guided-group walking holiday. Visiting some of the country's most iconic natural wonders including Lake Bohinj and Lake Bled, we can also enjoy wine tasting in Vipava Valley.

  • Trek through Triglav National Park
  • Sample some of the best organic wines in Slovenia
  • Discover the region's history & nature
  • Challenging hikes through ancient mountainscapes
  • Climb the third-highest mountain in Slovenia

Enjoy some of the more challenging treks in the Slovenian Alps, including summiting the third-highest mountain in the country, Mount Mangart, and spending three days in the stunning Julian Alps. For the more experienced hiker, there are plenty of opportunities to tick off more peaks should you wish. We stay in homely mountain refuges to keep us close to the trails, sampling traditional food and absorbing the beautiful mountain scenes.

The trip begins in the capital Ljubljana and then journeys into Europe's largest natural park, Triglav, where wildlife and flora abounds. We then stop at the must-see town of Lake Bled, the quieter but just as beautiful Lake Bohinj, and the refreshingly stunning region of Soca before the tour ends in the Vipala Valley where we can enjoy its culinary delights including wine tasting!

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart UK

On arrival in Ljubljana, transfer to the City Hotel in the historic quarter, where we meet at 18:30 for a welcome drink.

  2. Day 2: Hiking in Triglav National Park

Today, we start our walking adventure in Triglav National Park, following an off-the-beaten-track route with views down to Lake Bohinj. We pass traditional alpine cows and stop briefly to sample the famous trnič cheese before continuing our ascent to admire the panoramic views across the national parks.

We take a slight descent towards the mountain refuge, where we spend our first evening. From here, the views of Mount Triglav are spectacular, and for those craving more walking we can climb the neighbouring summit (an additional hour’s hike) for an alternative view of Slovenia's highest peak.

    Walking distance: 9 km | Ascent: 900 m | Descent: 200 m

  3. Day 3: Trekking in the heart of the Julian Alps

Prepared to be challenged today, as we set off for the spine of the Julian Alps. We initially take a gentle track from the hut before it quickly ascends towards a mountain pass with more views of Mount Triglav. If you'd like to extend the route by an additional hour, you can climb the adjacent peak, which provides panoramic views out over the peaks of Slovenia, Italy, and Austria. Our next route is gentler, as we explore the Seven Triglav Lakes Valley to admire the intriguing Karst landscape and local wildlife, including marmot.

    Walking distance: 12 km | Ascent: 700 m | Descent: 750 m

  4. Day 4: Hiking in Lake Bohinj

Today is our last day of mountain trekking, but the routes are more moderate than the previous days. We begin by traversing a scree slope towards the mountain saddle between two peaks, with an option to hike to the summit for an extra challenge. We then take a trail through verdant forests and meadows until we reach a serene lake, where a towering rock wall is reflected in the still waters.

We have a quick bite to eat before stopping for a swim in Lake Bohinj and transferring to Lake Bled.

    Walking distance: 8 km | Ascent: 200 m | Descent: 800 m

  5. Day 5: Lake Bled & Vrsic Mountain Pass

We have some time this morning for a quick hike up to a popular viewpoint for beautiful views of the lake, island church, clifftop castle, and the Karavanke Alps in the background. There may be time for a dip in the azure waters of Lake Bled before we head along the Vsric mountain pass to the pristine vistas of Soca Valley.

    Walking distance: 10 km | Ascent: 650 m | Descent: 650 m

  6. Day 6: Walk in The Soca Valley

We set off early, taking the zigzag road to Mangart saddle. We can choose from two hikes today - a challenging trail from the base of a mountain to the summit where we're rewarded with a 360-degree panorama, or a more relaxed hike that still offers stunning views from the top of Mangart saddle. We stop for lunch and the afternoon is free for us to explore the town of Bovec or enjoy one of the outdoor activities including kayaking, rafting, ziplining or canyoning.

    Walking distance: 8 km | Ascent: 650 m | Descent: 650 m

  7. Day 7: Vipava Valley wine region

We head south for our last full-day in Slovenia, starting with a short walk along the beautiful Soca River, across hanging bridges, past trenches and lookout points from World War One. After lunch, we transfer to the Vipava Valley, where we enjoy wine tasting in a local cellar and enjoy our final dinner as a group.

    Walking distance: 9 km | Ascent: 300 m

  8. Day 8: Depart Slovenia

Our tour ends today, but there's some free time in the morning before catching the transfer back to the airport.
