Discover More About Réunion
Réunion Island, situated in the southern part of the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa, is renowned for its volcanic landscapes, lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, coral reefs and picturesque beaches on the west coast.
Réunion is an overseas department of France, so French is the mother tongue. It's located approximately 550 kilometres east of Madagascar and 175 kilometres south-west of Mauritius. As a result, it's a remote tropical destination, featuring a captivating blend of African, French, Indian, and Chinese cultures.
A significant proportion of Réunion's attraction lies at high altitudes, rising to elevations exceeding 3,000 metres, with majestic volcanic calderas that are remnants of the island's tumultuous volcanic past serving as a stunning backdrop for this spectacular destination. These expansive calderas, also known as cirques, in the heart of the island provide exceptional hiking opportunities, boasting almost 1,000 kilometres of trails.
The island's most prominent feature is Piton de la Fournaise (furnace peak), one of the world's most active volcanoes that rises to an elevation of 2,632 metres. Holidays to Réunion Island offer the unique chance to walk past lava flows and peer into the peak of the volcano, or explore the maze of lava tunnels. Additionally, Piton des Neiges, a large extinct volcano, along with the island's three calderas are very popular with walkers and hikers, with panoramic views across the cirques from the peak.
Réunion is the perfect holiday if you're looking to walk along off-the-beaten-track trails, explore the rugged volcanic landscape, go diving, swim with whales and dolphins or sample the island's wide variety of locally-infused rum. We use a combination of hotels, guesthouses, and mountain huts and recommend travelling from May to November, to avoid the rainy season and when the weather is generally dry and cool.
