Starting and ending in Tarvisio, Italy, this circular route leads you through Slovenia and Austria via forest trails, valleys and peaceful alpine villages. Hike over mountain passes, explore Carinthia’s countryside, and enjoy views from Monte Lussari.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival day
Fly into Venice or Trieste and self-transfer to Tarvisio, a charming alpine town near the Italian-Austrian-Slovenian border. Spend time exploring the historic town, and preparing for your trek.

Day 2: Tarvisio to Alpino Luigi Zacchi
Begin your walk through forested trails and alongside glacial streams of the Anello di Fondovalle Valley, close to the Austrian border. Continue past forest and the Fusine Lakes until you reach the evening's mountain refuge.

Day 3: Rifugio Zacchi to Kranjska Gora
Climb toward Capanna Ponz, where panoramic views of the area can be enjoyed. Then, descend through alpine meadows and past lakes into Slovenia. Continue through the spectacular Zelenci Nature Reserve until you reach Kranjska Gora.

Day 4: Kranjska Gora to Baumgartnerhof
Walk through remote woodland trails before ascending across the Julian Alps until you cross the border into Austria, near the Jepa Pass. Enjoy sweeping views as you follow mountain ridge trails and hike through the forest to your accommodation.

Day 5: Baumgartnerhof to Villach
Today’s walk is more leisurely, taking you past the turquoise Lake Faaker See and castle ruins. The route winds through the village of Faak, woodlands and wetlands before reaching the outskirts of Villach.

Day 6: Villach to Notsch im Gailtal
Trek along the scenic Gail Valley, near Mount Dobratsch, and follow parts of the ancient Roman Way. Panoramic river views and small alpine communities line this peaceful section of the trail.
Today, there's an optional detour to visit castle ruins.

Day 7: Notsch im Gailtal to Valbruna
Ascend through forests and alpine pastures to Mount Osternig, re-entering Italy with expansive views as you journey through mountain pastures, past mountain huts and a remote chapel. Descend via quiet tracks and cycle paths into the alpine village of Valbruna.

Day 8: Valbruna to Tarvisio
Climb a historic pilgrimage route to reach the Sanctuary of Monte Lussari, perched high above the borderlands; this is a highlight for many hikers. Journey through pastures with expansive borderland views, before descending through woodlands until arriving back in Tarvisio.
