Slovenia is renowned as a walking destination, as hikers flock to experience this land of contrasts. Imposing mountain peaks, turquoise rivers and charming lakeside towns culminate to leave a lasting impression on visitors.

Meeting the group in the capital Ljubljana, we then travel north-west into the lush, alpine meadows of Velika Planina. Next, we head to the beautiful town of Lake Bled, and its lesser-known sister Lake Bohinj before journeying into Triglav National Park and Soca Valley with its emerald-hued rivers, valleys and gorges. The trip ends with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Skocjan caves and the town of Piran, nestled on the Adriatic Coast, where we can rest our feet after a wonderful week of walking.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart UK; overnight in Ljubljana

On arrival in Ljubljana, make your own way to the hotel, where we meet at 18:30 for a welcome drink.

  2. Day 2: Velika Planina

We have a gentle introduction to walking in Slovenia just above Ljubljana in Velika Planina. These meadows are dotted with mountain huts, home to cattle herds, and are adorned with alpine flora. We stop for a traditional Slovenian lunch where we can sample the famous trnič cheese before returning to the capital. The rest of the day is at leisure to see the sights.

    Walking distance: 10 km | Ascent: 300 m

  3. Day 3: Lake Bled & Lake Bohinj

Leaving Ljubljana, we ascend into the spectacular Julian Alps for our first taste of mountain walking. We enjoy walks around two of the country's glacial lakes - Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, where the brave can enjoy a dip, or you can opt to stay dry and take in the far-reaching views of the Alps.

We have lunch overlooking Lake Bled and can explore this charming town at leisure in the evening.

    Walking distance: 14 km | Ascent: 400 m

  4. Day 4: Triglav National Park

Today's route takes in Slovenia’s only designated national park and one of Europe’s largest, Triglav National Park. There are a vast network of walking trails in Triglav, varying in difficulty but all boasting breathtaking views of the glacial alpine valleys. Our route traverses through spruce forest up to 2,000 metres, dotted with streams, plunging waterfalls and views of the majestic Mount Triglav, which at 2,864 metres is the highest peak of Slovenia. After lunch at a traditional mountain hut, we have the choice of continuing our ascent or resting here before returning to Bled in the late afternoon.

    Walking distance: 12 km | Ascent: 700 m

  5. Day 5: The Julian Alps

We enjoy several short walks to experience the best of the routes in the Julian Alps today. Our first walk is to Pericnik Waterfall, where we can walk behind the curtain of cool mist that emanates from the falls. Next, we stop at Vrsic Pass, the highest mountain road in Slovenia, from where we embark on one of the most scenic hikes in our programme. The views here are incredible, extending across to Austria and on a clear day, Italy, too. We enjoy lunch at another mountain hut before transferring to the Soca Valley. If time allows, we may be able to enjoy a dip at one of the designated swimming spots in its river.

    Walking distance: 10 km | Ascent: 400 m

  6. Day 6: The Soca Valley

Today, we explore the virtually untouched natural beauty of the Soca Valley that captured the hearts of many authors, including Hemmingway. Our day is flexible, with several short treks within the valley, or for the more adventurous you could try rafting, canyoning or ziplining!

    Walking distance: 12 km | Ascent: 250 m

  7. Day 7: Skocjan Caves & Piran

We leave Soca Valley behind and start our day with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Skocjan Cave, home to the longest subterranean canyon in Europe. We then enjoy a vineyard tour and wine tasting, complete with a homemade lunch, before we transfer to Piran on the Slovenian coast. Here, we have the evening free to stroll the ancient streets or relax on the beach.

    Walking distance: 7 km | Ascent: 150 m

  8. Day 8: Depart Slovenia

Before the tour ends today, there may be time for a refreshing dip in the Adriatic or a final amble through this quaint town.

Make your own way from Piran to the airport or your onward destination.

Please note: Arrival and departure transfers can be added to the booking at an additional charge.
