This walking week provides an opportunity to explore a region of the Bosnian interior, which is often missed by seasoned walkers. This region is known for its medieval villages, rivers and lakes set against the backdrop of the Dinarica Alps. Traverse picturesque mountain paths, uncovering charming villages and agricultural communities, whilst enjoying the warm hospitality of the locals.

Throughout the journey, you stay in various accommodations, comprising family-run hotels, mountain chalets and a mountain hut.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Sarajevo

    After arriving in Sarajevo, you transfer from the airport to our city hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore Sarajevo at your leisure.

  2. Day 2: Hike the war routes of Igman Mountain

    Today, transfer to the base of Igman Mountain and begin your hike along the old war trail to Bjelasnica Ski Resort, the site of the 1984 Olympics downhill ski area.

    Walking distance: 14 km | Ascent: 1,120 m | Descent: 340 m

  3. Day 3: Hike to the Observatory and Umoljani mountain village

    This day walk to Umoljani mountain village includes the optional ascent to the Observatory, Bjelasnica's highest peak, which stands at 2,067 metres.

    From the peak, the trail descends through lush Bjelasnica pastures, and onto a paved road to the village.

    Walking distance: 13 km | Ascent: 965 m | Descent: 895 m

  4. Day 4: Hike to Obalj Peak & on to Lukomir Village

    Starting with an optional summit hike to Obalj peak, this village-to-village walk with views of the Rakitnica Canyon ends in Lukomir, the highest mountain village in Bosnia & Herzegovina at 1,469 metres elevation.

    Enjoy breathtaking landscapes, historic water mills and great vistas along the route.

    Walking distance: 8 km | Ascent: 670 m | Descent: 550 m

  5. Day 5: Hike across Rakitnica Canyon from Bjelasnica to Visocica Mountain

    On today's hike you head into Rakitnica Canyon, one of Europe’s deepest canyons, ending the day at the Via Dinarica Outdoor Centre, where you stay overnight at the Mountain Hut Vrela.

    Walking distance: 10 km | Ascent: 700 m | Descent: 950 m

  6. Day 6: Hike from Vito peak to Drstva peak

    Today you walk across one of the region's most exciting ridges, meandering through meadows and beech forests to Vito peak, along its ridge, and down to the peak of Drstva. Enjoy spectacular views of the other side of Rakitnica Canyon.

    After your trek, you're transferred to Sarajevo.

    Walking distance: 11 km | Ascent: 900 m | Descent: 900 m

  7. Day 7: Depart from Sarajevo

    After breakfast, depart from Sarajevo and tranfer to the airport for your flight home.
