Our Expert Team's Favourite Walking Trips & Tips

We asked five of our highly experienced and well-travelled team members to choose their favourite self-guided walking holiday in Europe – along with their top tips for making the most of it. Here's what they recommend and why!

From those who have lived in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland and know its towering mountains, alpine meadows and scenic trails like a local, to others who are drawn to Andalucia's sun-soaked olive groves, whitewashed villages and rustic charm, or France's delicious regional cuisine and pastel-coloured towns – these are the best self-guided walking destinations in Europe, as personally chosen by our team.

Alistair - Highlights of the Bernese Oberland

As a dedicated walker & trekker of over 30 years, Walks Worldwide Brand Manager Alistair loves to be able to escape and ideally get off the well-worn walking track on a regular basis. Whether it’s the Andes, the Alps, the Brecon Beacons or walking the Seven Sisters on the Sussex Coast, enjoying being on a trail somewhere in the world in all climates forms a huge part of his life!

“From personal experience and having lived in the region for almost a year, the Bernese Oberland never fails to deliver as a walking destination with majestic peaks, alpine lakes and glaciers dominating the landscape at every turn. It's a paradise for those who adore mountains – peaks dusted with snow, meadows brimming with flowers, and picturesque Alpine villages where the air is infused with the scents of pine and cheese. The ease of exploration by foot, chairlift, cog railway or cable car is a delightful experience in its own right.

Bring comfortable, well-worn walking shoes – certain trails can be steep at times – and dress in layers, even during the summer. The local currency is Swiss francs, and although credit cards are generally accepted, having some cash on hand is useful for mountain cafés (be sure to try the rösti!). Tap water is safe and tasty, making a refillable bottle essential. Additionally, always keep a lightweight waterproof jacket with you – just in case!”

Aleks - Andalucia: Along the GR7

Aleks, Sales Consultant for Walks Worldwide, discovered her love for travel during active family trips in Egypt, Mexico, China, and the USA. Raised by enthusiastic walkers, her childhood was filled with treks in the Tatra Mountains in Poland, and some of her fondest travel memories include a mesmerising night hike up Indonesia's Mount Batur for a stunning sunrise, a climb up Ben Nevis covered in snow and a peaceful walk in Andalucia's Sierra Nevada mountains.

“Walking the GR7 through Andalucía is like stepping into a sun-soaked storybook – whitewashed villages clinging to the hillsides, almond and olive groves stretching to the horizon, and the dramatic Sierra Nevada always in view. I love the mix of Moorish history, rustic charm and quiet trails. You’ll pass through villages like Lanjarón, Cañar and Trevélez – Europe’s highest – each with its own pace and personality.

My tips? Good walking shoes are essential for the rocky paths, and walking poles help on the steeper climbs. Bring layers – mornings can be cool, even in summer. The euro is used, and while cards are accepted in towns, small cash is useful in cafés and rural spots. Tap water is drinkable, but keep a refillable bottle with you – it gets hot! And don’t miss trying the local jamón in Trevélez – it’s legendary!”

Rhiannon - The French Riviera Trail

Walks Sales Consultant, Rhiannon, has visited over 65 countries and enjoyed hiking holidays in Austria, Italy, Turkey, Morocco and France to name a few! Based in Devon, Rhiannon spends most weekends hiking or kayaking with friends, and has completed three ultra walking marathons in the UK!

For a holiday which combines landscapes, architecture and a gastronomic flair, The French Riviera Trail is the perfect balance. Hikes take you along coastal and mountain paths, through the pastel-coloured town of Menton and the medieval charm of Sainte-Agnès.

After each day's walk, it’s the ideal place to unwind, whether that’s on the beach, or in a café or bar, soaking up the atmosphere with a glass of local wine and delicious regional cuisine. The region has fantastic shopping, with everything from handmade clothing to artisan perfumes.

Emily - Naples, Vesuvius & Amalfi Coast Trails

Unlike most of the team, Emily did not enjoy walking when she was younger – making it all the more surprising that she’s developed a passion for it over the years. She’s now been on six walking holidays in beautiful destinations like Canada, Italy and Peru. She’s thrilled to share her love for exploring the world on foot.

Whilst there are several scenic treks along the Amalfi Coast, the beautiful Path of the Gods hike within ‘Naples, Vesuvius & Amalfi Coast Trails’ is by far my favourite route. Rich with culture, historical significance and wonderful views of the Amalfi Coast, you truly feel immersed within the path’s natural beauty.

I went on this trip in October, and (in my opinion) it was the perfect time to visit. Still very warm at this time of year, the path was covered in cyclamen – otherwise known as sowbread  and other vibrant flora.

Beth - Lakes & Alps in Style

Beth’s love for exploring the world by foot has taken her on many walking holidays, with highlights including Austria's picturesque Salzkammergut region, Germany’s Schloss Neuschwanstein and the Norwegian fjords. After starting her career in travel in 2016, Beth hopes to inspire others to discover the world’s beauty through walking.

“Austria's stunning Salzkammergut region is a destination I could easily return to again and again. With peaceful walking trails that wind through picture-perfect backdrops of glistening lakes, towering mountains and traditional alpine villages, it's the perfect place to escape, unwind and recharge.

I love how welcoming the locals are, and after a day of walking, there's something comforting about tucking into some well-earned food such as Käsespätzle to fuel your next hikeThe Instagram-famous Hallstatt village is even more enchanting in person, and a visit to the Salzwelten Salt Mine Adventure in Hallstatt certainly adds a unique twist to this holiday, especially if you're willing to try the miner's slide!"
