Northern Portugal is home to one of Europe’s most rewarding walking regions, the Douro. At Walks Worldwide, we now have three unique ways to experience it.
The itineraries commence in Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage city known for its colourful riverside Ribeira district, tiled churches and the famous port wine lodges on the banks of the Douro River. Porto is a fabulous starting point offering culture, cuisine and centuries of maritime history.
From here, the landscape transforms dramatically as you follow the river inland into the Douro Valley – one of the world’s oldest wine regions. Terraced vineyards climb steep slopes above the river, creating one of Europe’s most distinctive and photogenic walking environments. Further east, the landscape becomes wilder and more remote, opening into the Côa Valley and the borderlands near Spain, where ancient history and rugged scenery define the experience.
Together, Porto, the Douro Valley and the Côa Valley offer one of Portugal’s most varied walking regions, with everything from city sightseeing to vineyard trails and off-the-beaten-track adventures.
Which Douro Walking Holiday is Right for You?
Each of our new Douro itineraries reveals a different side of Northern Portugal. Whether you want wine, culture, gentle walking or remote adventure, there's a perfect match for you.
Douro Valley Walk & Wine Discovery
If you're looking for the classic Douro experience, this is it. This walking holiday takes you deep into the heart of the Douro’s UNESCO-listed vineyard landscape, where centuries of winemaking have shaped dramatic terraced hillsides above the river. Expect a relaxed walking experience combining scenic trails with visits to wine estates (quintas) and unforgettable river views.
Highlights
- Iconic terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley
- Wine estate visits and tastings
- Scenic riverside and hillside walking routes
- Comfortable hotels and a relaxed pace
Walking style: Easy to moderate walking. Expect steady ascents and descents through vineyard country, but nothing too challenging.
Best for: Wine lovers and those wanting the most iconic Douro scenery.
Porto & Douro Valley Short Hiking Break
Short on time but want the highlights of Northern Portugal? This itinerary combines city and countryside in one seamless experience. Begin in Porto, with free time to explore its historic streets, before heading into the Douro Valley for gentle walking and scenic exploration.
Highlights
- Time to explore the vibrant city of Porto
- Gentle walks in the Douro Valley countryside
- A balance of city, cuisine, wine and nature
Walking style: Easy! This is the least strenuous of the three itineraries – walks are shorter with less ascent and descent.
Best for: First-time visitors and those looking for a short break.
Walking the Douro & Côa Valleys
For those looking to go beyond the vineyards, this itinerary reveals a completely different side of Northern Portugal. As you move east from the Douro Valley, the scenery becomes more rugged, open and remote. The Côa Valley is known for its dramatic landscapes and prehistoric rock art – it's one of the most important open-air archaeological sites in Europe. This itinerary showcases a truly authentic side of Portugal.
Highlights
- Remote landscapes of the Côa Valley and eastern Douro
- Ancient rock art and deep cultural heritage
- Quiet trails within untouched countryside
- Traditional villages
Walking style: Easy to moderate with more varied terrain and longer walking sections.
Best for: Adventure seekers and travellers wanting a more remote and cultural journey.
