Beginning in Porto, travel into the heart of the Douro Valley to explore vineyard hills, traditional villages and quiet rural trails. Walk to São Mamede da Ribatua, along ridge-top paths near Casal de Loivos and down to Pinhão, with opportunities to enjoy wine tastings and scenic river views throughout.

Combining easy walking trails, this itinerary offers a perfect introduction to the Douro. Stay in local hotels and guesthouses, travel by train through dramatic landscapes and experience the region’s rich culture, cuisine and winemaking heritage at a relaxed pace.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrival in Porto

    Upon arrival in Porto, make your own way to your hotel. After check-in, enjoy free time to explore the city’s historic streets, riverside and cafés.

  2. Day 2: Travel to Alijó in the Douro Valley

    Transfer to the station and take a scenic train journey to Pinhão (payable locally), followed by a transfer to Alijó. Here, settle into your boutique accommodation and explore the surrounding landscapes.

  3. Day 3: Circular walk via São Mamede da Ribatua

    Starting from the hotel, follow a trail past vineyards, woodlands and farmland. Hike through the ancient village of São Mamede da Ribatua; take some time to explore its narrow cobbled streets before continuing on to the Tua reservoir, and back to Alijó.

    Walking distance: 15 km | Ascent: 370 m | Descent: 370 m

  4. Day 4: Picturesque walk from Alijó to Casal de Loivos

    Today's hike is about classic Douro Valley views and sprawling vineyards. From Alijó, follow a trail adorned by vineyards and sweeping views, until you reach the eastern Pinhão Valley ridge.

    Here, enjoy panoramic views of the terraced vineyards, olive groves and rural farms. Continue until you reach Casal de Loivos, from here, a transfer takes you back to Alijó.

    The route has several opportunities to stop at a wine estate for a tour or tasting. 

    Walking distance: 14 km | Ascent: 225 m | Descent: 400 m

  5. Day 5: Walk to Pinhão and return to Porto

    Transfer to Casal de Loivos and enjoy a shorter walk through classic Douro landscapes, descending to the riverside town of Pinhão. Here you can explore Pinhão independently, or book a boat trip on the Douro River independently.

    When ready, take the train back to Porto (payable locally) and make your own way to the hotel for your last night.

  6. Day 6: Departure from Porto

    Depending on your flight departure time, you may wish to spend some time exploring Porto, walking along its riverside or visiting its historic buildings.

    Make your own way to the airport in time for your return flight.
