Starting in Porto, journey into the Douro Valley via Peso da Régua, before walking through lesser-visited landscapes around Armamar and Tabuaço. Walk among orchards, olive groves and steep vineyard slopes, with ever-changing seasonal colours. Encounters with local life, visits to historic monasteries and tastings at traditional quintas bring insight into the region’s heritage, before finishing in the picturesque riverside village of Pinhão.
This immersive walking holiday reveals both the famous and hidden sides of the Douro, blending scenic trails with cultural encounters. From quiet hillside paths to lively riverside towns, each day offers a deeper connection to the region’s landscapes, heritage and winemaking traditions.

Day 1: Arrive in Porto
Upon arriving in Porto, a transfer takes you to your first hotel. Depending on your arrival time, the remainder of the day is free to explore Porto independently.

Day 2: Make your way to Peso da Régua
Today, journey into the Douro Valley. There are two options available; firstly, it is possible to take a train from Porto, which takes approximately two and a half hours. Alternatively, you could take a river cruise from Porto along the Douro River and into the Douro Valley.

Optional Walk: Valdigem to Régua
If time allows, you can partake in an optional walk from Valdigem to Régua. If doing this, take a taxi from Régua to Valdigem, and follow a route back to Regua.

Day 3: From Valdigem to Armamar
After a short transfer, the walk begins in the village of Valdigem, which is home to traditional manor houses. Follow rural paths through quiet villages towards Armamar, known as the apple capital of the mountains.
The route passes through Figueira and Aldeias, two traditional villages with little tourism. Small cafés offer an opportunity to pause and observe village life. As you reach higher ground, scenery changes with olive groves, cherry orchards and apple trees.

Day 4: Salzedas to Armamar
A transfer takes you to the historic village of Salzedas, home to a twelfth-century Cistercian monastery. After time to explore the village, the route passes small rural settlements and open countryside, with seasonal scenery ranging from blossom-filled trees to fruit harvests. Views extend across the rolling hills of the Douro Valley and towards the peaks of Alvão Natural Park.

Day 5: Armamar to Quinta do Tedo
Today, travel through dramatic scenery towards the main Douro Valley. As you approach the village of Vacalar, the valley opens, revealing its vast network of terraced vineyards. The descent continues with sweeping views over the river and surrounding wine estates.
The day ends with a relaxing wine tasting at Quinta do Tedo, before a transfer to the town of Tabuaço.

Day 6: Circular trail: Tabuaço via Adorigo
This circular route explores varied terrain around Tabuaço, including hillside paths, open countryside and flatter vineyard areas at higher altitude. The walk passes through Barcos, one of the Douro’s official wine-producing villages.
Today, an optional visit to a family-owned winery with over one hundred years of history can also be arranged.

Day 7: Valença do Douro to Pinhão
The day begins in Valença do Douro, a hillside village overlooking the Quinta das Carvalhas estate. The route passes through village streets before entering a network of vineyards belonging to smaller producers. As the trail climbs and descends through the hills, vineyard patterns change constantly, reflecting generations of agricultural tradition.
The route continues past historic wine cellars, including Real Companhia Velha, where a tasting can be enjoyed. The walk concludes in the riverside village of Pinhão.

Day 8: Vilarinho de Cotas to Pinhão and departure
The final walk begins in the hilltop village of Vilarinho de Cotas, with views across the Pinhão Valley. Today follows a mostly downhill route, gradually descending through vineyards towards the river. The route continues through verdant vineyards before reaching Pinhão.
After the hike, make your own way back to Porto via train - tickets can be purchased online prior to departure.
