Starting in Bogota, I wandered the streets of La Candelaria, filled with colonial architecture and vibrant graffiti art. The next day, my adventure truly began.
Flying to Inirida, I caught my first glimpse of the Amazon, where rivers meander through dense rainforest. From Inirida, I journeyed by boat along the Colombia-Venezuela border to my accommodation in a secluded community.
With a local guide, I paddled a traditional dugout canoe through the flooded rainforest to a rocky outcrop where the day’s hike began.
Ascending a rock hill and through dense forest, I eventually reached a breathtaking viewpoint across the Guiana Shield, where rainforest, rivers and towering rock tepuis stretched across the horizon.
After our descent, a boat took us to a unique swimming spot to cool off. As the water relieved me from the rainforest heat, elusive pink river dolphins surfaced, enhancing the day’s beauty.
The following day we cruised to the sacred Cerros de Mavecure, a trio of striking tepuis. After docking, we began the steep climb to the summit of one of the hills, occasionally using ropes and handmade branch ladders. Along the way, we learned about the local communities, traditions and the spiritual significance of the tepuis.
At the top, the view was breathtaking, a panorama of endless rainforest and tepuis, with a light breeze carrying the sounds of the rainforest. Standing there, feeling deeply connected to nature, I understood why the hills are sacred.
Colombia demonstrated that the image of a country is not always the full story. Exploring remote, untouched landscapes offers a glimpse into a country’s soul, something that bustling cities or popular tourist spots often cannot provide.
In these hidden corners, you encounter striking scenery alongside the deep cultural and spiritual connections that define the local way of life.
Stepping off the beaten path allows you to experience a country as it truly is, authentic and alive with stories waiting to be discovered.
For me, it was in these remote regions that I found the heart of Colombia.
