Beginning in Montefiascone, the route passes Lake Bolsena and Italy's picturesque countryside as you head towards Rome. Along the way, discover and stay in the medieval towns of Viterbo, Vetralla, and Sutri, some of which are still relatively undiscovered by tourists. As you near Rome, you reach the urban areas of the city. It's possible to either walk into the city on day seven or skip this section and take public transport.
The route from Montefiascone to Rome covers the final 130 kilometres of the Via Francigena, passing through medieval villages along the way that have strong ties to ancient Rome.
Included in the holiday is the pilgrims' passport, which is a memento of your journey. This passport can be stamped at various locations such as tourist offices, accommodations, select restaurants, and other notable spots along the route. As this section covers the final 100 kilometres of the journey, with the stamps on your pilgrims’ passport, it is possible to also get a certificate of pilgrimage.

Day 1: Arrival day
Upon arrival make your own way to your accommodation in Montefiascone.

Day 2: Trek from Montefiascone to Viterbo
Embark on your first hike of this holiday. From Montefiascone, follow a trail through the flat landscape that separates Lake Bolsena from the Cimini Mountains. From here, journey through rolling hills until you reach Viterbo, a town with charming medieval lanes and a cathedral worth exploring.
Walking distance: 18 kilometres | Ascent: 175 metres | Descent: 430 metres

Day 3: Trek from Viterbo to Vetralla
The first section of today’s hike takes you along the Etruscan "hollow" roads, from here you enter the heart of the Etruscan countryside before reaching Vetralla, located on the slopes of Mount Fogliano.
Walking distance: 17 kilometres | Ascent: 290 metres | Descent: 310 metres

Day 4: Trek from Vetralla to Sutri
After departing from Vetralla, follow a wooden pathway until you reach the Church of Madonna di Loreto. Next, you pass through a vast estate adorned with hazelnut and majestic oak trees, past the ruins of an ancient monastery and village of Capranica. Today’s hike ends in Sutri, a village with a rich historical heritage and a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre.

Day 5: Trek from Sutri to Campagnano
The initial part of the hike takes you through fields as far as Monterosi. From there, you can visit the beautiful Monte Gelato waterfalls. Continuing on, you follow a scenic trail that leads you to the gates of Campagnano. The village of Campagnano has a central piazza and many of its buildings are painted in soft pastel colours. If you wish, it's possible to shorten today's hike.

Day 6: Trek from Campagnano to La Giustiniana
The route today is mostly flat, consisting of dirt roads and charming country trails. The latter part of today’s hike passes through urban areas and near main roads as you enter the suburban areas near Rome. Additionally, you may encounter a stream that needs to be crossed.
Walking distance: 28 kilometres | Ascent: 435 metres | Descent: 605 metres

Day 7: Trek from La Giustiniana to Rome
Hike through Insugherata Park, a natural reserve near the city, closer to the Eternal City, Monte Mario Belvedere is a good photo opportunity. From here, you can see the majestic dome of Saint Peter's before descending and reaching Piazza San Pietro, your ultimate destination and the endpoint for countless pilgrims throughout the centuries. If preferred a taxi can be taken.

Day 8: Departure day
After breakfast, your journey comes to an end. If you have time, the sights of Rome can be explored. We can add additional nights if you wish to have longer to explore the city, please contact us to arrange this.
