Discovering Peru’s history and must-see sights

When one thinks of Peru, the iconic Machu Picchu often springs to mind. Yet, my recent trip to this fascinating country revealed there is much to discover beyond the famed ruins. My journey focused on uncovering the rich history of the Incas and exploring the vibrant rural areas. My trip provided an unforgettable blend of historical insight and cultural immersion.

Beginning in Huaraz, I hiked along the old Inca Road, this road covers approximately 40,000 kilometres across South America and dates to the mid-15th century. The ancient Inca Road network once connected communities and allowed for travel between historic Inca cities such as Machu Picchu. During my journey, I hiked through high Andean landscapes, passed farming communities and discovered traditional Quechua villages. I witnessed an array of landscapes from snow-capped peaks, to lush valleys, forests and rivers. After the hike, I spent a few days in Arequipa discovering its architectural gems.

As someone who has travelled extensively, both independently and with groups, I did wonder, how safe is Peru? However, throughout my time there, whether I was exploring as part of a group or independently, I felt safe and welcomed. The locals were incredibly friendly and eager to share their culture. Having said this, as with any destination, it is wise to be cautious and vigilant. I believe the warm nature of the Quechua, the indigenous Andean people, has influenced the kindness of Peruvians. The Quechua are often seen as the backbone of Peru’s cultural heritage and act as a connection between the Inca past and modern-day Peru.

Reflecting on my time in Peru, it is clear that the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are firmly established Peruvian icons. While Machu Picchu remains a must-see, there is a growing movement to highlight the lesser-known, but equally captivating, things to do in Peru. For example visiting the Choquequirao ruins, the Salkantay Trek, Chavin, Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain and Huaraz, or discovering the culture and lifestyle of the Quechua people.

Our new guided-group holidays focus on upcoming must-see sights in Peru. Firstly, we offer the Choquequirao Trek, Choquequirao is often referred to as the "sister city" of Machu Picchu. The Inca ruins at this extensive site remain largely unexplored. Secondly, the Salkantay Trek, is an alternative hike to Machu Pichu, passing diverse landscapes, including cloud forests and mountain passes. And lastly, Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. The mountain's mineral slopes create vibrant bands of colour which are blue, yellow, pink and violet, a dramatic contrast to the surrounding green valleys. Vinicunca is a reasonably challenging high-altitude trek but is also one of the most beautiful in the Andres.
