The regal way to trek through King Ludwig’s Bavarian Alps. Choose from our standard accommodation along the way or upgrade to superior hotels to add a touch of luxury to your walking holiday.
Ludwig II, the somewhat eccentric King of Bavaria, left behind a legacy intertwined with history, art and extravagant architecture. The ‘Swan King’ is best known for creating the fantasy castle of Schloss Neuschwanstein, without doubt the most famous landmark in Bavaria.
During the course of this wonderful holiday you’ll discover more about the fascinating Swan King, visiting many of his fairytale castles, made even more atmospheric by their picturesque locations, surrounded by magnificent alpine peaks.
Visit the iconic medieval castle of Neuschwanstein and the famous alpine resort of Garmisch, where there’s the option of going to the summit of Zugspitze – the roof of Bavaria.
We offer a choice of accommodation from standard to superior - please speak to your Walks consultant for more information.
Fly to Munich (or Memmingen) and travel by train to the Bavarian village of Oy-Mittelberg.
Passing through several delightful Bavarian villages today, along the way you can stop at the lovely Lake Grunten where a dip in the lake will cool you down on warmer days. You then head towards the village of Pfroten, nestled at the botom of the mountain range.
Following the ridge line of this small mountain, you continue to descend to the medieval town of Fussen, home to two castles of King Ludwig and your delightful hotel, complete with spa, on the shores of Lake Forggen.
The number one and ’must see’ attraction here is the most famous landmark in the whole of Bavaria, the truly magnificent fairytale style Schloss Neuschwanstein. In the afternoon, there's time to ascend the 1,730 metre summit of Tegelberg.
The trail rises steadily to reach the old, historic hunting hut of the last Bavarian King at Bleckenau. The route continues upwards to reach a pass and the Alpe Jagerhutte before beginning to descend quickly down into the Ammerwald valley.
Hike to Garmisch through the mountain valleys and forests, following the ‘Via Alpina’ that runs all the way from Trieste to Monaco along old forest tracks.
Today you have choices from Garmisch, one moderate and one more challenging. The challenging hike is to walk to King Ludwig’s high alpine castle, Schachen Schloss. The more moderate option is arguably one of the most scenic walks in Bavaria to the utterly charming village of Mittenwald.
