This challenging trek takes us into the provinces of Khevsureti and Tusheti, the ‘soul’ of Georgia and into a landscape of snow-capped mountains, alpine meadows, roaring rivers and verdant valleys.

  • Magnificent Caucasus mountain scenery
  • Medieval fortresses & traditional villages
  • Meet friendly locals
  • Breathtaking views from Atsunta Pass
  • City tour of Tbilisi

The mighty peaks of the Caucasus reach to heights of over 5,000 metres and form a natural barrier between geographical Europe and Asia. To the north is Russia and on the southern side Georgia, one of the oldest orthodox Christian countries in the world, home to legends such as the Golden Fleece. This challenging trek takes us into the provinces of Khevsureti and Tusheti, the ‘soul’ of Georgia and into a landscape of snowcapped mountains, alpine meadows, roaring rivers and verdant valleys.

A good mix of camping and overnighting in local guesthouses affords the opportunity to experience both the wild side as well as the genuine cultural side of the Caucasus. Reaching the top of the 3,430 metre Atsunta Pass, our efforts are rewarded with magnificent views. The trip then returns to Tbilisi to enjoy your final evening in Georgia and a farewell dinner.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart UK

  2. Day 2: Arrive Tbilisi, afternoon guided city tour

Arriving into Tbilisi early this morning, you will be transferred to your hotel where an early check in has been arranged. Take some time to freshen up before heading out on an afternoon city tour.

  3. Day 3: Journey from Tbilisi to Shatili via Mtskheta

Today you will drive over the Datvis Jvari Pass to the medieval tower city of Shatili. On the way you will visit Mtkheta City, the old capital of the Kartli-Iberia Kingdom.

  4. Day 4: Shatili to Khonistchala

Today you have a full day of trekking. Leaving Shatili you will head up to the Mutso Towers at 1,400 metres, before continuing in a generally uphill direction to your first campsite at Khonistchala (approximately 1,800 metres).

    Walking distance: 16 km | Ascent: 400 m

  5. Day 5: Khonistchala to Khidotani

Today's trek is another primarily uphill day as you now head into the wilds of the Caucasus mountain range and trek towards the Atsunta Pass.

    Walking distance: 18 km | Ascent: 1,000 m

  6. Day 6: Khidotani to Kvakhidi

Your challenging Caucasus trek continues, but at least today there is some downhill! You will start the day by heading up to the highest point of the trip, the Atsunta Pass, at 3,430 metres.

    Walking distance: 18 km | Ascent: 900 m | Descent: 800 m

  7. Day 7: Khvakfidi to Chesho

It is a steady downhill for essentially all of today, but it is still a long day all the same. Stopping at Parsma and Girevi, you’ll notice that, often cut off from the outside world and with challengingly accessible at best, the locals' traditional way of life is virtually unchanged.

    Walking distance: 19 km | Ascent: 100 m | Descent: 600 m

  8. Day 8: Chesho to Omalo via Dartlo

Tusheti Province is considered to be the soul of Georgia. Today's trek will take you to Dartlo, a fantastic example of the middle age villages in the region. Take some time to explore before continuing to Omalo.

    Walking distance: 20 km | Ascent: 100 m | Descent: 400 m

  9. Day 9: Omalo to Tbilisi via Sighnaghi

This morning you’ll have the chance to visit the Keselo Towers, before transferring by road to Sighnaghi via Telavi and Alvani, crossing the Abano Pass. At 2,926 metres, this is the highest pass in Georgia accessible by vehicles. If you wish, you will get the chance to stop for photos at the Alaveri Cathedral before reaching Sighnaghi, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch and wine degustation at a local winery.

  10. Day 10: Day trip to Gori & Upliscikhe Cave City

After breakfast, drive to Gori, where there will be some time to visit Stalin’s birthplace and museum. Continue to Upliscikhe Cave City via Ateni Sioni Church, before driving back to Tbilisi for your final night in Georgia and a farewell dinner at a traditional Georgian restaurant.

  11. Day 11: Final morning in Tbilisi, fly back to the UK

Enjoy your final morning in Tbilisi before returning to the UK.

For anyone taking an evening flight, your day is left open to explore at your leisure, however you should ensure you return to the hotel in plenty of time for your airport transfer.
