This self-guided walking holiday in the Baltics allows you to discover the breathtaking landscapes of Lithuania and Latvia. Begin your adventure in Vilnius, exploring its historic streets before journeying through lush national parks, picturesque villages, and serene lakes. Discover the vibrant city of Riga and conclude in the medieval town of Cesis. Highlights include the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit, the Gauja National Park, and medieval castles. This holiday is a perfect way of immersing yourself in the rich nature, culture, and history of the Baltics.

You can travel between destinations by public transport or self-drive, using your own car or a rental. This flexibility lets you tailor the holiday to your preferences.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Lithuania

    Upon arrival in Lithuania, make your own way to the hotel in Vilnius. 

  2. Day 2: Hiking in Pavilniai Regional Park

    Take the train from Vilnius to Pavilniai, where the adventure begins. Follow the hiking trail through scenic forests and along the Vilnius River, passing viewpoints, an old dam, and Belmont Mill before reaching Uzupis. Explore this unique neighbourhood before heading back to your hotel by foot or public transport.

    Walking distance: 10 kilometres

  3. Day 3: Trakai & Varnikai Reserve Hike

    Begin your day with a train ride to the medieval town of Trakai, known for its stunning countryside. Explore the town's medieval architecture, including the castle and churches, before hiking through Varnikai Reserve with its forests, boardwalks, and Bevardis Lake. After the hike, return to Vilnius by train.

    Walking distance: 15 kilometres

  4. Day 4: Hike the Karkle Litorina Trail

    In the morning, take a train to Klaipeda, drop off your luggage at the hotel, and then head to Giruliai. Hike the Karkle Litorina Trail along the Baltic coast, featuring stunning landscapes, cliff paths, and highlights like Dutchman's Cap Cliff and WWII fortifications. After the hike, return to Klaipeda.

    Walking distance: 8 kilometres

  5. Day 5: Morning in Klaipeda & travel to Plateliai

    Spend your free morning in Klaipeda exploring the Old Town, enjoying a café, visiting the Maritime Museum, or strolling by the Danes River. Afterward, take a train to Plunge, where a private transfer brings you to your accommodation in Plateliai. The rest of the day is yours to relax or explore the area independently.

  6. Day 6: Discover the Šeirė Trail

    Žemaitija National Park is known for its dense fir forests and rich biodiversity, offering a serene escape on the Sheire Nature Trail. Walk along the lake shore, then venture into towering forests that gradually transform into swampy lakes and bogs, showcasing the park's tranquil beauty.

  7. Day 7: Travel to Riga

    In the morning, a private transfer takes you to Plunge bus station for a 4-hour bus ride to Riga, Latvia's capital. After arriving, head to your hotel and spend the rest of the day exploring Riga or relaxing. Riga's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its medieval landmarks, Art Nouveau architecture, and vibrant Central Market.

  8. Day 8: Kemeri Bog Trek

    Take a train from Riga to Kemeri and start your walk along quiet roads and forest trails to the Kemeri Bog trail in Ķemeri National Park, known for its rich birdlife and unique landscapes. Explore the bog's undersized pines, deep pools and wild rosemary. Afterward, return to Kemeri station to head back to Riga or detour to Jurmala.

    Walking distance: 11 kilometres

  9. Day 9: Sigulda, Krimulda & Turaida Hike

    Following a train journey, start your trek in Sigulda, passing medieval castle ruins, Krimulda Manor, and varied landscapes like Gutman's Cave and the Gauja River. The trail leads to Turaida Castle, where you can choose to visit or continue hiking along the river. At the gondola station, either shorten your walk by crossing the river or continue on foot back to Sigulda.

    Walking distance: 14 kilometres

  10. Day 10: Explore Sigulda & Travel to Cēsis

    This morning is free for you to relax or explore Sigulda at your own pace. You might visit Sigulda Castle, take the gondola over the Gauja River, or enjoy the local shops and cafes. In the afternoon, take the train to Cēsis with your luggage. After checking into the hotel, the rest of the day is yours to explore the medieval town of Cēsis.

  11. Day 11: Cīrulīšu Nature Trail

    From Cēsis, follow the city paths to the Cīrulīšu Nature Trail at Gaujaskalns bus stop. The trail winds through forests and past caves, lakes and rock formations, with the option to walk or take the bus back to Cēsis. Along the way, enjoy scenic viewpoints, natural springs, and the diverse beauty of the Gauja River Valley.

    Walking distance: 14 kilometres

  12. Day 12: Depart Latvia

    Make your own way to the airport in time for your onward flight.
