This holiday gives you an insight into Madeira, with an array of hiking trails covering a variety of landscapes and areas on the island. You're based in Machico and Santana whilst exploring these areas including the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsular, Levadas, Porto da Cruz coastal path and beyond. 

Your accommodation is in friendly and comfortable hotels with on-site restaurants and additional facilities. The perfect places to relax after a day’s walking and exploring. 

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fly to Madeira

    Upon arrival at Funchal airport, your holiday begins with a transfer to your hotel in Machico.

  2. Day 2: Levada dos Maroços & Caniçal to Machico

    A transfer takes you to Maroços. From here you hike alongside the water channel of Lavada dos Maroços. Passing agricultural landscapes, you get an insight into the rural communities of Madeira.

    Walking distance: 14 km | Ascent: 150 m | Descent: 400 m

  3. Day 3: Ponta de São Lourenço Peninsula

    Today’s walk takes you to the well-known eastern tip of Madeira, the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsular. The hike follows the rugged coast with fabulous views stretching out to sea and back across the island itself.

    The walk can be done at your leisure and pace before taking a bus back to Machico.

    Walking distance: 6 km | Ascent: 350 m | Descent: 350 m
     

  4. Day 4: Caniçal to Porto da Cruz

    After a transfer to Caniçal, the first section of the walk follows the Levada do Caniçal. After this it becomes a direct track and finally opens out onto a coastal path. During the walk you pass by several viewpoints including the Boca do Risco and Cabo de Larano. Finally, you drop into Porto da Cruz for the final stretch of the walk.

    Walking distance: 14 km | Ascent: 750 m | Descent: 400 m

  5. Day 5: Levada do Furado

    Starting in Ribeiro Frio, today's walk follows a Levada do Furado, before passing through laurel forests. At the top, you're rewarded with coastal and laurel forest views. Once in Portela, you follow a cobbled path to Porto da Cruz. Alternatively, the walk can end in Portela.

    Walking distance: 15 km | Ascent: 370 m | Descent: 875 m

  6. Day 6: Caldeirão Verde

    On today’s trek, you pass through forests and past traditional wooden houses before reaching a waterfall. The path involves walking along mountain edges. Although there's a railing, the path may not be suitable for those with vertigo.

    Walking distance: 13 km | Ascent: 560 m | Descent: 850 m

  7. Day 7: Santana to Arco de São Jorge

    Covering part of the Caminho Real on today’s walk you begin in Santana passing quaint villages, ruins and varied landscapes before descending on a sometimes zigzag path into Arco de São Jorge. Here you can relax and explore the town or rose garden (open seasonally) before a final night in Santana.

    Walking distance: 14 km | Ascent: 560 m | Descent: 850 m

  8. Day 8: Depart Madeira

    After breakfast, you're transferred to the airport in time for your return flight.
