South Africa has so much to offer and on this walking-focussed safari, you will explore a variety of scenic and cultural destinations within the country. This is an active holiday and the level of walking is varied from leisurely to challenging.

In Mpumalanga you can soak up the mountains and marvel at waterfalls before heading on to the famed Kruger National Park and its iconic wildlife. Learn about the fascinating Zulu culture and walk along mountain stream paths in the 200 kilometre-long Drakensberg Mountains.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart UK

    Depart the UK on an overnight flight to Johannesburg.

  2. Day 2: Arrive Johannesburg

    Arrive in Johannesburg and rendezvous at the group hotel in the city.

  3. Day 3: Transfer to Mpumalanga

    Drive to Mpumalanga, visit the gold-mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest and enjoy spectacular views of the Lowveld from God’s Window. Take a short, leisurely walk to the waterfalls of Mac Mac pools

  4. Days 4-5 : Kruger Private Game Reserve

    Blyde River Canyon walk, together with day and night game drives at a private game reserve. Enjoy the wilderness of big game country around the campfire at our tented lodge.

  5. Day 6: Kruger National Park

    Early morning game walk where we hope to track wildlife on foot. Afternoon game drives. (3-4 hours walking.)

  6. Days 7-8 : Kingdom of Swaziland

    A full day’s walk at Malalotja Nature Reserve, walking through the undulating hills and seldom explored mountainous reserve to arrive at a beautiful waterfall.

  7. Days 9-10 : Isimangoliso Wetland Park

    Visit the Hluhluwe Game Reserve which focuses on rhino conservation. In the afternoon walk through Isimangoliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the forests meet the estuary. (2-3 hours walking.)

  8. Days 11-12 : Zululand

    Visit the informative Tulana museum, before a challenging hike through undulating hills to the Buffalo River, retracing the footsteps of the two British fugitives. (4-5 hours walking.)

  9. Days 13-14 : Transfer to the Drakensberg mountains

    Travel to the Drakensberg mountains where, on the following day, we enjoy a full day of walking the mountain trails before an invigorating dip in the clear mountain streams of Royal Natal National Park. (5.5 hours walking.)

  10. Day 15: Drakensberg

    Trek to the top of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre and the beautiful Tugela Falls. Afterwards, relax in our lodge overlooking the Mont-Aux-Sources mountain range. (3-4 hours walking.)

  11. Day 16: Transfer to Johannesburg & depart

    The tour ends at around 17:00 in Johannesburg, where we board an overnight flight back to the UK.

  12. Day 17: Arrive UK
