Hiking from mountain hut to mountain hut we can experience the calm of the Icelandic countryside. From the steaming hot thermal pools of Landmannalauger all the way through to the Thórsmörk Valley at the end of our trek, each day brings a different geological phenomenon to marvel at whilst we hike.

  • Bathe in natural hot springs and thermal pools
  • Trek the Landmannalaugar Nature Reserve
  • Visit Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers
  • Try local Icelandic cuisine

This exciting holiday combines wonderful trekking with fascinating geographical wonders and the warm and diverse culture of Iceland. Walking point to point staying in local mountain huts gives us the opportunity to immerse yourself in this beautiful landscape.

Starting at the trail head in Landmannalauger we get to experience the totally natural thermal and mud pools before we start our hike. Walking past glaciers and striking lava fields each day offers a new landscape to explore in Iceland!

Finally, arriving back in Reykjavik, you have the chance to explore the equally vibrant but very different Icelandic city before departing this outlandishly different island.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart the UK

Depart the UK, arriving into Reykjavik and transfer to local guesthouse.

  2. Day 2: Transfer to Landmannalaugar

This morning we take a local coach to Landmannalaugar and the start of our hike. We have lunch before heading south into the mountains. The trail takes us past small gorges, steaming hot springs and yellow mountain ridges before arriving at Hrafntinnusker mountain hut in the late afternoon.

    Walking distance: 12 km | Ascent: 590 m | Descent: 165 m

  3. Day 3: Walk to Álftavatn

Today's walk takes us through gullies and past steaming hut springs and mud pools. The steep descent to Jökultungur brings us to a friendly oasis on the banks of a river – a perfect place for a rest and to enjoy the fascinating views to the south to the Álftavatn area (Swan Lake), and the Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers. Álftavatn Lake comes into view and the path flattens out down to the lakeside hut.

    Walking distance: 12 km | Ascent: 170 m | Descent: 615 m

  4. Day 4: Walk to Botnar

Today's walk crosses bridges and wades through the rivers of Bratthálskvívi and Bláfjallakvísi as we walk towards Botnar. Depending on conditions we visit the majestic Markarfljót canyon cut almost 200 metres down in the rocks. The views are magnificent towards the Eyjafjallajökull - a 1,664 metre high glacier covered volcano and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

    Walking distance: 16 km | Ascent: 260 m | Descent: 345 m

  5. Day 5: Walk to Thórsmörk

Walking close to the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier we enter the beautiful green valleys and the Arctic birch forests of Thor (Thórsmörk). The glacial streams running from underneath the icecaps of the glacier have formed this valley and the vegetation starts to grow thicker and higher as we descend.

    Walking distance: 17 km | Ascent: 410 m | Descent: 690 m

  6. Day 6: Morning walk to Sönghellir Cave

This morning there is the option to hike to Sönghellir Cave and Valahnúkur mountain, from where we can enjoy magnificent views, before taking the public bus back to Reykjavik. The evening is free to enjoy the sights of the city.

    Walking distance: 5 km | Ascent: 200 m | Descent: 200 m

  7. Day 7: Depart Iceland
