This 8 day tour explores some of the highlights of the famous Eastern Lycian Way while staying in friendly local accommodation.
Running through Lycia, an ancient region of Turkey, the Lycian Way follows a mixture of coastal trails and inland paths in the Taurus Mountains. It is a rich landscape covered in luscious forests, fed by the many streams and rivers that weave through the region.
On this itinerary you will visit mountain villages, goat trails and tracks through forests, over agricultural land and ancient terraces. The area is littered with historical remains for you to explore, some are documented and managed others are just there waiting to be discovered. Following routes used by local shepherds, hunters, subsistence farmers and families, you’ll have the chance to interact with wonderfully friendly locals. With the rural code of hospitality, you may even be invited for a cup of tea or two along the way. You will also get the chance to sample the deliciously fresh locally grown produce in the many traditional restaurants and experience the diversity that Turkish cuisine has to offer.
Your flight from the UK to Antalya will normally arrive in the evening. You will be met outside the arrivals hall by your driver and transferred to your accommodation in Adrasan.
You will be transferred to Ulupinar where you will start today's walk. Heading through light forest and through green valleys, reach the Chimera Flames. Explore the remains of a Lycian temple and a Byzantine church before continuing to the ancient city of Olympos.
A short transfer brings you to the Bay of Karaoz, from where you will hike to the Lighthouse of Gelidonya which is situated on the South-eastern tip of ancient Lycia.
After walking across Adrasan beach you will come to a track which leads over the northern headland of Adrasan Bay, with fantastic views over the bay and to Water Island. Reaching Sazak Bay, there's time to relax or swim in the sea before taking the boat back to Adrasan.
Alternative route: Olympos to Adrasan via Zenecetes Hilltop Retreat
If you would prefer a more difficult option, you may wish to walk from Olympos back to your accommodation in Adrasan, on one of the classic Lycian Way paths. Make your way along an old goat track, dappled with pine and strawberry tree forest, before reaching the Upper Olympos ruins and the final retreat of Zenecetes. After taking some time to explore, head back down to the river which sits at the northern end of Adrasan Bay.
Today you will be transferred to Kekova, with a chance to visit the ancient site of Myra en route - one of the historic highlights of the Lycian Way. Explore the tombs, high rock faces and discover one of the best preserved early theatres in Turkey.
A short transfer takes you to Kapakli to being today's walk. The path will lead you behind the hilltop castle at Simena, where you can make the short climb to the ruins and explore the site which starts in the necropolis. After admiring the beautiful view of the bay, continue on the path to Ucagiz.
Starting the day with a transfer to the village of Kilicli, you will walk on a small road before reaching the old goat tracks which take you down to the Bay of Kekova. After finally reaching the beach and a small restaurant, you will be collected by boat for your cruise back to Ucagiz, passing the Sunken City and enjoying swimming and snorkelling stops en route.
An early morning public bus is available at 8am which will take you to Antalya bus station (payable locally). From here you can get the airport shuttle or choose to stay and explore Antalya if you have an evening flight.
