Experience the Cape Camino, The Way of Table Mountain, a 650-kilometre hike showcasing South Africa’s rich culture, history, and landscapes. Enjoy breathtaking views of Table Mountain, two oceans, farmlands, vineyards, forests, and beaches during this 186 kilometre section of the Camino. Starting your journey in Newlands, follow the Camino through Hout Bay and the Winelands, before finishing in Tulbagh. The holiday concludes with a few days to explore Cape Town independently. This personal pilgrimage offers solitude, reflection and spiritual growth.  

You receive a digital copy of route notes and maps, and access to a smartphone app with route information and GPX trails. On some days, a local chaperone from the community will guide you, offering insights into the local way of life and answering any questions, while respecting your need for solitude if preferred.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart UK

  2. Day 2: Arrive in Cape Town

    Upon arrival in Cape Town, you're transferred to your accommodation in Newlands. The remainder of the day is yours at leisure.  

  3. Day 3: Peninsula Walk

    The initial Mountain Shade Leg of the Cape Camino follows hiking trails on Table Mountain. Traverse the lush Contour Path above Newlands Forest, home to endangered granite and peninsula shale fynbos. The route offers breathtaking views, waterfalls, and the serene Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, where you can take a break. Continue the journey following Rhodes Drive into the suburbs of Constantia, and conclude this leg at Schoenstatt Shrine.

  4. Day 4: Newlands to Constantia

    The Wine to Water Leg marks the start of the Cape Camino. Begin at Schoenstatt Retreat, where pilgrims can light a candle and offer a prayer. Discover renowned Constantia wines, starting with Groot Constantia. In Tokai, you can visit Pollsmoor Prison, where Nelson Mandela was held. A guide accompanies you through Westlake. After which, ascend the Muizenberg mountains via Boyes Drive, then choose to continue towards Kalk Bay or descend into Muizenberg.

  5. Day 5: Constantia to Hout Bay via Vlakkenberg Ridge

    Vlakkenberg, located within Table Mountain National Park, lies between Constantiaberg and Constantia Nek. This trail offers a challenging yet rewarding ascent with breathtaking views of the valley, Constantia Nek, Hout Bay, and False Bay.

    The hike ends in Hout Bay, a picturesque coastal suburb of Cape Town, known for its vibrant harbour, fresh seafood, and stunning beach. The bay is surrounded by mountains, providing a scenic backdrop.

  6. Day 6: Chapmans Peak to Noordhoek

    Today's hike starts by ascending steeply for about 30 minutes along the stream bed and crossing the river via rock steps. The path leads to a plateau, to a gentler trail with stunning views of Hout Bay. This leads to the saddle between the lower and main Chapman Peak. The final ascent to the summit takes 20–30 minutes, with a steep incline and brief rock scramble. Enjoy panoramic views of Fish Hoek, Noordhoek Valley, and Hout Bay. The descent follows the same route.

  7. Day 7: Noordhoek to Scarborough

    The coastal walk from Noordhoek to Scarborough involves beach walking and steep inclines around Kommetjie. Hike to the 34-metre-high Lady Lighthouse of Kommetjie and the peaceful Soetwater Resort before continuing along Witsand Beach past Misty Cliffs to Scarborough.

  8. Day 8: Scarborough to Cape Point

    Departing Scarborough, follow a trail leading you to Cape Point. The highlights of today's trek include the varied scenery, rugged rocks and sheer cliffs. The hike can be broken up by a journey on the Flying Dutchman Funicular, which runs to the upper lighthouse. 

    An afternoon transfer takes you to your accommodation in the Winelands.

  9. Day 9: Fynbos Estate to Badenhorst Estate

    Today’s journey takes you across farmlands, travelling from one renowned wine estate to another. Along the way, you pass a small farmworker's community where children wait for their school bus. The route consists of mostly flat gravel roads with a few gentle inclines. Before arriving at AA Badenhorst, you pass a sacred church. As you walk the AA Badenhorst's driveway, enjoy breathtaking views of the Paardeberg Valley.

  10. Day 10: Badenhorst to Hermon

    From the farmlands at the foot of the Wellington mountains, the route heads towards Hermon, passing the Schalk Burger Winery and crossing the Berg River. Follow the Blou Porcelein farm road before a turn leads down to the river. Continue along the riverbank to reach Blou Porcelein Rustic Farm.

    Walking distance: 22 kilometres

  11. Day 11: Hermon to Riebeek Kasteel

    The journey begins with a gentle incline before levelling out. Along the way, pass pomegranate plantations, vineyards and peach groves. Spot domesticated cows grazing and blue cranes along the route and enjoy breathtaking valley views of Porterville, Gouda, and Riebeek Kasteel. In Riebeek Kasteel, visit quaint coffee shops or enjoy olive tasting. Wildflowers bloom in September, while pomegranate season peaks in January and February.

  12. Day 12: Riebeek Kasteel to Gouda

    Riebeek Kasteel is a charming town with artisanal shops and one of South Africa's oldest hotels, ideal for a refreshment stop. Along the flat and occasionally dusty road to Gouda, you pass the historic Zonquasdrift house, with surrounding wheat fields creating a stunning winter backdrop.

    Walking distance: 23 kilometres

  13. Day 13: Gouda to Tulbagh Town

    Today, you follow a picturesque path that winds its way through the fynbos. Hikers commence their journey from The Workshop and pass through the charming town of Gouda. From The Workshop, the trial first passes Onsrus, before you cross a bridge over the 'Klein' Berg River. As the journey progresses, the path becomes rockier. The route then descends, meandering through the final stretch of fynbos before continuing along the Old Pass towards Tulbagh and running beneath the railway. There's also a shorter route of 11 kilometres available.

  14. Day 14: Cape Town

    After breakfast a transfer takes you to your accommodation in Cape Town, the remainder of the day is yours at leisure

  15. Day 15: Day at Leisure

    Today you have the day to explore Cape Town and its attractions from Robben Island, to the sightseeing bus and the V&A Waterfront.   

  16. Day 16: Depart Cape Town

    Today a transfer takes you to the airport in time for your return flight. 

  17. Day 17: Arrive UK

Please note: The Cape Camino features a mix of paved roads, dirt paths, and occasionally rugged terrain. Most of the trail is well-maintained and signposted, though some sections can be challenging, especially after rain when paths become muddy or slippery.
