This carefully-paced walking holiday follows contrasting stages between Kranjska Gora and Tolmin, showcasing Slovenia’s most captivating scenery. Hike the Vršič Pass, follow the Soča River through gorges and meadows, explore quiet villages and encounter First World War history. Luggage transfers and welcoming hotels allow you to focus fully on the trail.

Additional nights can be added to the itinerary to allow for time to relax or partake in many of the activities around Bovec and the Soča Valley. 

From forest paths and alpine meadows to riverside trails and historic military routes, each day reveals a new side of the Julian Alps. This holiday suits experienced walkers seeking both physical challenge and cultural depth, with well-marked trails, varied terrain and a rewarding sense of journey through one of Europe’s most unspoilt regions.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Slovenia

    Upon arrival in Slovenia, make your own way to the hotel in Kranjska Gora. The remainder of the day's at leisure to relax or wander around the town.

  2. Day 2: Trek Kranjska Gora to Trenta

    Today you embark on your first walk. From Kranjska Gora, you pass the serene Jasna Lakes before entering forest paths. The route climbs steadily over alpine meadows toward the Mihov Dom shelter, and past the quaint Russian Chapel. At Vršič Pass, the trail opens to dramatic panoramic views of the Julian Alps. Following old mule tracks, descend toward the source of the Soča River, before reaching Trenta.

    Walking distance: 23 kilometres | Ascent: 950 metres | Descent: 1,115 metres

  3. Day 3: Trek Trenta to Bovec

    In the morning, your hike follows the Soča Trail, with the emerald-green river flowing beside you. The path winds through forests and open meadows, crossing the Kršovec Gorge via a suspension bridge. Approaching Bovec, the trail passes the confluence of the Soča and Koritnica rivers. You enter Bovec, a lively town surrounded by rugged peaks. 

    It's possible to add additional nights here to enjoy the many activities available in Bovec and on the Soča River. 

    Walking distance: 22 kilometres | Ascent: 120 metres | Descent: 275 metres

  4. Day 4: Trek Bovec to Drežnica

    Setting off from Bovec, the route initially follows the Soča River, passing forest sections and clearings where alpine flowers bloom. As the trail begins to climb away from the river, it offers stunning views of the valley below and the surrounding high mountains. The path leads through rolling meadows, past rustic farmhouses, and finally ascends toward the picturesque village of Drežnica. 

    Walking distance: 23 kilometres | Ascent: 470 metres | Descent: 385 metres

  5. Day 5: Trek Drežnica to Tolmin

    From Drežnica, follow a historic military path across alpine meadows. The trail passes old wartime chapels and scattered stone markers, giving a sense of the area’s layered history. Gradually descend through forests and along hillside paths, to approach the Soča River again. The final stretch leads to Tolmin, where the rivers open into a wide, serene valley, framed by dramatic cliffs and the surrounding mountains.

    Walking distance: 22 kilometres | Ascent: 760 metres | Descent: 1,105 metres

  6. Day 6: End of holiday

    The holiday comes to an end after breakfast today; make your own way to the airport to your next destination.
