Guiding Yourself Across Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is an excellent choice for year-round hiking, beaches, culture and history. A self-guided tour also offers you the flexibility of starting on your preferred day of the week and will cover a variety of landscapes of the island, from the desert south-east, through forests, the mountainous centre and ending at a beach resort in the north-west.

Arriving and overnighting in Aguimes, your first day’s walk leads you through the Tirajana volcanic crater, passing typical Canarian small, white hamlets and endemic vegetation to arrive at one of the most beautiful villages on the island. The following two days lead you on through scented pine forests and endemic flora with stunning views over the Guayadeque Valley and onwards via the Roque Nublo route. Here you will walk through the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reservation which offers spectacular views over the valleys and mountains of the western side of the island and ending the day with a well-earned drink in Gran Canaria’s highest village.

Next day, walking by a stone cross marking the island’s geographical centre, you continue to Tejeda having passed by ancient cave dwellings. The final walk day takes you through the Tamada forest and into the rural Lugarejos region. What better way to finish your journey than with some wine-tasting at a local winery?

Your final day is free for you to decide whether to continue exploring the island, pay a visit to the capital city of Las Palmas or simply relax on the beach.

Benefitting from the latest technology, all walkers will have the option of the use of an iPad Mini with a GPS. Each day’s walk will already be downloaded on the device allowing you just to switch on and follow your particuar day’s route. (A hard copy version is also included if preferred, along with maps and contact details.)

As you will be walking predominantly in rural areas, expect the hotels to be simple and small, though characterful and offering plenty of charm and hospitality after a hard day’s walk. They are also well located in the village centres to allow for ease of finding somewhere for your dinner. Breakfast is included at your own hotel before setting off each day and you are also provided with a small picnic lunch to take on each walk.

Located just 5 minutes from the beach, the final night’s hotel is a 4 star with pool and spa, allowing you to benefit from some relaxation time before your onward journey.

We can’t think of a better way to explore the crater, ravines and forests and dramatic coastline of this miniature continent.
