For the Love of Trees

What makes a great walk? It could be the far-reaching views, the achievement of guiding yourself from A to B or it could be the wonderful company to share your experiences with as you go. In fact, all these factors combine to create a memorable journey. Recent studies have highlighted the mental health benefits derived from a walk in the countryside and we are all increasingly focused on the growing importance of trees to life on Earth. So, let’s pay tribute to the life-giving trees of the world by highlighting some trips in which trees take centre stage.

Austria

Help rejuvenate the lungs of the planet through your walking holiday to Austria. For each booking taken our local agents Salzkammergut Touristik will plant a tree in this gloriously beautiful region. Trees are planted with each booking number and varieties include conifers and beech among others. Along with your travel documents you will receive the photo of “your tree” upon arrival – you even have the option of hiking to see it!

Finland

Coniferous sweet-smelling pines, spruces and larches make up the Taiga forest of Finland. Travel to the wilderness close to the Russian border to immerse yourself in nature. Look out for wolf tracks and other local wildlife as you hike and canoe with your guide, surrounded by mile upon mile of trees.

Japan

Shinrin Yoku (Forest Bathing) is an expression coined by the Japanese which simply means immersing yourself in a forest environment for well being. Walking along the ancient pilgrim trails of Togakushi, framed by giant cedar trees is a humbling experience. Stunning autumnal foliage or new spring life will enhance your walking pleasure.

Germany

Hectare coverage of German forests has increased over recent years. Encounter beautiful forests, waterfalls, dyke ditches and the peak of Brocken Mountain. Pay a visit to Germany’s largest wooden church – the oak and spruce built baroque Marktkirche zum Heiligen Geist – on a self-guided walk from Osterode to Thale.

The rugged Corsican landscape attracts walkers from far and wide. Embrace the changing landscape, at points walking through fragrant pine woods and then past 2,000-year-old oak trees, their thick trunks gnarled over time. Drift into a Mediterranean climate, met with lemon trees, figs and Eucalyptus.
