Discover the Camino de Costa Rica Hiking Trail

Costa Rica is a luscious landscape of simmering volcanoes, golden beaches, and a wildlife haven for 5% of the world's existing biodiversity. This country is well known by wildlife enthusiasts and adventurers alike, but as a walking holiday destination? Perhaps not so, until now!

Nature trails in southern Costa Rica have predominantly been known as a wildlife experience, but in 2018 a route from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean was formalised by a nonprofit organisation, creating the Camino de Costa Rica hiking trail.

What is the Camino de Costa Rica?

When we hear the word ‘camino’, we tend to associate it with the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. However, this Spanish word isn’t a religious term, it simply means a path of travel, or route!

Covering 280km and divided into 16 sections, the Camino de Costa Rica is a unique trail spanning coast-to-coast, crossing a plethora of spectacular terrains including lush rainforests, coffee plantations, and spectacular mountains.

Taking inspiration from the Camino de Santiago, the Camino de Costa Rica offers a similar experience, passing through rural communities, protected reserves and national parks, giving hikers a glimpse into the less-visited areas of Costa Rica.

Why should you trek the Camino de Costa Rica?

  • The Camino de Costa Rica experience is a return to the essence of what a true hiking experience should be.
  • Costa Rica hiking allows you to discover the flora and fauna of the country in a different way. This may include sighting vibrant orchids, banana groves, sloth, hummingbirds, toucans, lizards, and more!
  • Experience a combination of tropical climate and trekking through varied and sometimes challenging landscapes, terrain and distances. This includes walking through small rivers, trekking into the mountains, and navigating basket pulley systems to cross larger rivers.
  • Discover the cultural heritage and “pura vida” lifestyle of the country and its people.
  • Immerse yourself in local life, and meet indigenous communities as you journey into the landscape. Walking this route also helps to support these local communities and families through homestays and sustainable tourism projects along the way.
