10 days | From £699 - Self-guided, for 2 or more persons travelling together

  • Hundreds of friendly mountain villages
  • Walk on age-old tracks and mule paths
  • Rolling hillsides, olive groves, vineyards and panoramas

This walk is a magnificent trip through the finest areas of the Greek Island of Corfu. Following inland tracks and cobbled paths, the trail undulates through willow, cedar and juniper forest, alongside rivers and through lush pastures. Fine viewpoints of mountains and sea are a regular occurrence from the coastal tracks, ridges and when you summit Corfu's second highest peak, Agii Deka (576 metres). Historic sights you pass include monasteries, a Venetian salt works, manor houses and quayside tavernas, and there are ample opportunities for refreshing swims to cool down in the deep turquoise coloured Mediterranean Sea. At the start of the wilder mountain section in the North there is a stunning panorama from the ruined Taxiarchis Chapel with its beautiful fresco-covered walls. A limestone plateau is crossed, followed by the climb to the summit of Mount Pantokrator (915 metres). Towards the end you traverse over a high col from where you can see both the southern trail you have walked and further to the north. You descend to Kalami beach and then finish the walk along the undulating paths on the northern coast.

This walk is offered as a two-week holiday enabling you to complete the full trail, or as a ten-day holiday if you are looking for a shorter break to the paradise and peace of Greek island life. You will return home feeling refreshed, fit and relaxed after experiencing the charming walking on Corfu.

Day 1. Arrive Corfu
Transfer by taxi to your accommodation in Asporcavos. (See How to join and depart this trip section later in this trip dossier.) If you arrive early enough, you may want to do the loop circuit from Asporcavos to Spartera and back.
Day 2. Asporcavos to Santa Barbara
On this walk, you will cross over the southern part of the island to the east and back to the western coast. You start from Asporcavos through olive groves and fields to Lefkimmi. Here, your path takes you through the various neighbourhoods and historic city centre of Lefkimmi. Leaving the second biggest town of the island, you will descend into the green valley of the Garden River. The last part of the walk leads you up again, so you have wonderful views of both the East and West coasts. Your final descent takes you to the West coast of the island and the town of Santa Barbara.
Day 3. Santa Barbara to Paramonas
An easy first day of almost level walking during which you follow the beach, passing in front of the resort of Agios Georgios, but soon leaving 'civilisation' again. The beach here was used for scenes in the Bond film ?For Your Eyes Only?, and there will be time for a swim here. Your route leads on through sand dunes covered with a forest of juniper and cedar trees. Then, crossing a footbridge, you reach Lake Korission, where you are sure to see a variety of wild birds. Tracks and an undulating section of road take you to Paramonas. Meals will be taken at a beachside taverna.
Day 4. Paramonas to Benitses
Today is the first day of real ascent. As soon as you leave Paramonas you will walk up on overgrown paths through olive groves. Once high up, the views over the coastline are amazing. On the descent you pass through small villages and a heathland valley. After the village of Strongili your way climbs again to reach today?s highest point of Dafnata. You have the option to go even higher to the viewpoint at Mount Stavros before making your descent on the road to Coyevinas, where a forest trail takes you to town of Benitses.
Day 5. Benitses to Pelekas
Today you will climb the second highest peak of Corfu, Agi Deka Mountain. After a short transfer to Stavros, you will follow narrow and old footpaths which will lead you through forest and an impressive landscape of huge limestone rocks. After passing the village of Ano Garouna, your walk takes you steeply up to the summit of Agi Deka. Some descent and level walking takes you to the picturesque village of Pelekas.
Day 6. Pelekas to Liapades
Half an hour's downhill walk takes you to Myrtiotissa, ?the loveliest beach in the world' (now used by nudists!). Then you have to regain the height you have lost (and more!), with a steep climb on gravel and concrete tracks, from which you can enjoy more fine views. Passing the village of Vatos, the terrain levels out and your way follows the bank at the Ropa River, bordered by pasture and willow trees. Leaving the river, you ascend into olive blanketed hills, where tracks lead you to Liapades, an ancient village full of lovely old mansion houses. A 15 minute downhill stroll takes you to your accommodation at Liapades Beach.
Day 7. Liapades to Agios Georgios
Initially a very difficult footpath takes you to Paleokastritsa. You quickly cross the main resort road and head into the hills again, using a network of lovely cobbled footpaths. A climb of about an hour takes you to Lakones and Bella Vista (?the best view in Europe?). There follows one kilometer of unavoidable, sometimes busy, road here after which a path takes you across olive groves to Krini, through ?Lily Valley? to Makrades, then down one of Greece's most remarkable footpaths which cuts along a cliff. Another half hour down an olive grove track takes you to the resort of Agios Georgios.
Day 8. Spartillas to Agios Spyridon and Kalami
Today the real mountain territory beckons. Starting, you are soon on a steep mountain footpath climbing a gully to a fantastic viewpoint at Taxiarchis Chapel. Descending now on a mountain track with fine views, you reach the high col of the main ridge, where both the northern and southern sections of Corfu are visible. You then descend to Old Perithia. You reach the sea at Almiros and follow the beach to the wild, bare headland which is Corfu's northernmost point, where a rough path along a low cliff takes you to the end of the Trail at Saint Spiridon Beach. From here should then take a taxi to your accommodation in Kalami.
Day 9. Mountain and N.E Coastal Circuit
Today is almost a circular walk that starts and finishes in Kalami. Climbing quickly into the hills you then follow high mountain flanks past Porta and onto the semi-ruined Mengoulas.
Day 10. Depart Corfu
Transfer by taxi to the airport.
