The Corfu Trail

15 days, Self-Guided for 2 people of more, Seasonal Daily Departures

The Corfu Trail, opened in 2001, is a fully waymarked route which passes through rural municipalities and avoids the more heavily developed areas. You will be able to enjoy beauty spots, viewpoints, beaches, villages, monuments, monasteries and diverse landscapes as you walk between overnight accommodation of small hotels and tavernas. The whole 220km trail can be covered easily during a two-week holiday, but if you would prefer to walk a section of it as a one-week break we would be delighted to arrange this for you.
Day 1. Outbound
Fly to Corfu from your choice of UK airport and transfer to Spartera at the southern end of the trail.
Days 2 to 6. Spartera to Liapades
Initially the Trail follows inland tracks through olive groves but then travels west towards the coast, passing through picturesque old villages. Sometimes rising and falling steeply it follows quiet roads and cobbled paths, through willow, cedar and juniper forests, alongside rivers and through lush pastures. There are many fine viewpoints, including those from coastal tracks, ridges and the top of Corfu's second highest peak, Agii Deka. Historical sights include monasteries, a Venetian saltworks, old mansion houses, a Folk Museum and quayside tavernas, and there are ample opportunities for refreshing swims along the way.
Day 7. Rest day
Opportunities for swimming, lazing or exploring at Liapades Beach!
Days 8 to 11. Liapades to Kaminaki
This section of the Trail follows cobbled inland tracks and a dramatic coastal path with sensational views. It winds along quiet agricultural roads through picturesque villages, culminating in dramatic scenery and rugged mountainous terrain. At the start of the wilder mountain section there is an excellent viewpoint from the ruined Taxiarchis Chapel, with its fresco-covered walls. A Karst type plateau is crossed, with a climb to the summit of Pantokrator (915 metres). Towards the end of this stage you cross a high col from where both the southern and northern sections of Corfu Island are visible, followed by a rough descent through a ghost village to Kalami beach.
Day 12. Rest day
Take time to explore the coastal path, eat out at Lawrence Durrell's White House or simply laze on the beach!
Days 13 and 14. Finale
The grand finale of the Trail lies in the hard, undulating paths on the north coast. Here the Trail follows steep cobbled paths and high mountain tracks, passing through quaint villages and rounding the wild, bare headland of Corfu's northernmost point.
Day 15. Homeward
Transfer to the airport to fly home from Corfu Town.
Corfu Trail Ten Day Special
We also offer the above trip on a ten day basis. With daily flights now to Corfu this allows you to take minimal time off work by, for example, starting on a Friday and returning on a Sunday. Roughly following the standard 15 day itinerary you begin in Santa Barbara and, omitting various rest days, follow Days 3-8 and Days 11-15 arriving at Kalami a the end of the trail before transferring back to the airport and flying home. Losing none of the spirit of the original trail you still cover the entire island from North to South, enjoying welcoming hospitality from this most traditional of Greek destinations.
