The Tiroler Lech Nature Park was established to protect one of the last remaining wild river landscapes in Europe, and the Lechweg Trail offers an extraordinary walking experience for those seeking adventure in Central Europe.

  • Follow the wild river Lech from the source on its journey to Füssen
  • Walk amongst stunningly diverse alpine scenery
  • Hike in a World Heritage area
  • Walk over the longest suspension bridge in Austria
  • View the castle that inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle

The turquoise Lechweg River has shaped the landscape and cultivated the area’s flora and fauna for centuries, making it one of the most species rich habitats in Central Europe.

Following the Lechweg river from Lechall in Fussen to its spring in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, the Lechweg Trail leads past the royal castles of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Germany, onto one of the largest colonies of alpine ibex in Europe and past a waterfall which magically springs anew after running dry every year.

You will encounter the longest-span suspension bridge in Austria. The trail connects three regions and two countries with their traditions and histories.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive Lech

Fly to Innsbruck or Munich and make your way by train to the charming town of Lech for the start of your tour. Lech is famous for its stunning mountain panorama and is an inspiring start for your walk.

  2. Day 2: Formarinsee to Lech

Your first stop is the source of the river Lech. Named as one of the most beautiful spots in Austria, the high mountain lake is formed anew every year from the meltwater of the surrounding mountains.

    Walking distance: 14 km | Ascent: 190 m | Descent: 620 m

  3. Day 3: Lech to Lechleiten

This morning you'll walk through shaded forests and over alpine meadows towards the village of Warth. With the help of a small suspension bridge, the path leads over the river Krumbach up to Lechleiten.

    Walking distance: 14 km | Ascent: 730 m | Descent: 630 m

  4. Day 4: Lechleitan to Holzgau

Today the path climbs above the river Lech and you'll find yourselves walking through sparse coniferous forests before a wide forest path leads you into the valley.

    Walking distance: 16 km | Ascent: 420 m | Descent: 850 m

  5. Day 5: Holzgau to Elbingenalp

It's a spectacular start to the day as you cross the suspension bridge that spans 110m above the Höhenbach gorge. The wide forest paths follow the now larger Lech river down to your stop for the night in Elbingenalp.

    Walking distance: 12.5 km | Ascent: 750 m | Descent: 820 m

  6. Day 6: Elbingenalp to Stanzach

On leaving Elbingenalp this morning you'll start your day hiking directly along the Lech river on wide paths before the trail winds its way back towards the forests.

    Walking distance: 21 km | Ascent: 445 m | Descent: 540 m

  7. Day 7: Stanzach to Weibenbach

You'll be walking along the wide, gravelled, stream bed with few detours today. After the long walk yesterday, today's stage offers a gentle change of pace and a chance to take in the beautiful scenery.

    Walking distance: 13.5 km | Ascent: 86 m | Descent: 145 m

  8. Day 8: Weibenbach to Pflach

Shortly before the town of Reutte, the route takes on more of an incline and becomes more demanding. As the name suggests, the 'panorama high path' lies at height above the valley. The short ascent is worthwhile for the views of the Reutte Basin and later the Frauensee Lake.

    Walking distance: 18 km | Ascent: 550 m | Descent: 600 m

  9. Day 9: Pflach to Füssen

You’ll follow the shaded forest paths over the Tyrolean / Bavarian border to the Alp lake, whose banks you'll follow. Along the way, first Hohenschwangau Castle and later Neuschwanstein Castle appear in the distance spurring you on to the end point of the walk and the picturesque town of Fussen.

    Walking distance: 15 km | Ascent: 720 m | Descent: 750 m

  10. Day 10: Fly back to the UK

Depart Füssen and make your way by train to Munich for your flight back to the UK.
