Germany - Saxony's Sandstone Mountains

9 days, Self-Guided 2 People or more, Seasonal Daily Departures

New for 2008

Somewhere a bit different in the heart of Europe! Situated in the south-eastern area of Germany, bordering onto the Czech Republic, this itinerary takes you walking in both of these fascinating countries. Towering fortresses and incredible rock formations dominate the landscape, whilst picturesque small towns line the river, creating a very attractive and varied walking experience.

Days 1 and 2. Outbound
Fly to Dresden and spend some time exploring this fascinating and revitalised Saxon city. The following day take the train for the 45-minute ride to Bad Schandau, in the heart of the Saxon National Park. Time to explore this lovely town and enjoy some walking on the banks of the River Elbe.
Days 3 and 4. National Park Walks
Stride out through the National Park to your first fortress, the Hohenstein. Passing through Rathen with its natural 2000-seat theatre you reach the famous Bastei, with sandstone rocks, pillars and bridge spanning the ravine. The next day cross the river by ferry and walk through the B??renstein mountains to the Konigstein fortress. The impressive mountain fort offers wonderful vistas over the picturesque sandstone mountains and the eastern Ore Mountains. Continue on to Konigstein.
Days 5 and 6. Gohrisch and Krippen
Pass the Barbarine rock needle, cross over the Pfaffenstein table mountain until you reach the small health resort of Gohrich, and the region called 'The Empire of the Stones' because of the high number of unique rocks with lookout points and caves. One of them is Mount Gohrisch itself, which you will summit before continuing onto Cunnersdorf and finally Kohlbornstein and your hotel for two nights, in Krippen.
Day 7. Czech Republic
Another country today! Hop on the fast train to Sch??na, then the ferry to Hrensko in the Czech Republic. Your walking tour leads you to the Rock Arch Pravcick?? Br??na, the largest natural stone bridge on the European continent. A boat through the Edmundsklamm Gorge takes you back to Hrensko, where you return to Krippen after a fascinating day.
Day 8. Bad Schandau
A challenging day for those who want it or gentler walks for those who don't. Ascend the steep path to the Schammsteine rocks then walk along the Affensteig route and follow the Painters Path to the Ostrauer M??hle tavern. From the National Park you board the traditional tram to return to Bad Schandau and your final night in this picturesque and beautiful area of Germany. If a less demanding walk is preferred, the famous Elbe Paddle Steamer leaves Bad Schandau for the historic town of Pirna, for a visit of the old town and surrounding area.
Day 9. Homeward
Transfer to Dresden and fly home.
