Situated 20 kilometres north of the ancient Inca capital of Cusco, the Sacred Valley was inhabited by the Incas between 1,000 and 1,400 AD and used extensively for the production of maize. Lying at a lower elevation than Cusco, the Sacred Valley is an important destination for those en route to Machu Picchu, and a place where visitors can acclimatise before beginning their Inca Trail trek.
Largely forgotten about until the 20th century, Machu Picchu is today one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites and, for many visitors, the highlight of a visit to Peru … or indeed South America itself.
