Rysy and the High Tatras

8 days, Self-Guided, Minimum 2 People, Seasonal Daily Departures

  • Hiking the Tatranska Magistrala Trail
  • Climb Rysy - Poland's highest mountain
  • Jagged Carpathian panoramas

The High Tatras are the highest and most spectacular peaks in the entire Carpathian Mountain range. The greater part of this rugged range of dramatic spires lies within the astonishingly beautiful country of Slovakia, home to a wide variety of wildlife including bear, lynx, wolf and Golden Eagle. Our walking holiday based upon the travel experiences of Mark from the Walks Worldwide offices own Carpathian adventures, allows you to explore the most majestic section of the High Tatras by following the excellent Tatranska Magistrala trail that traverses the range.

There is also the opportunity to make an optional and highly recommended ascent of Rysy (2499 metres), the highest mountain in Poland and also the highest walk-up peak in Slovakia. It's said that Lenin climbed Rysy for a meeting with his Polish counterpart and from "Lenin's Seat" (a natural armchair-like rock on the summit), he would have enjoyed what is widely regarded as one of the best mountain views in the whole of Europe.

On clear days the views from Rysy are truly incredible, as one rocky summit after another extends to the far horizon, as well as down to jewelled mountain lakes that glitter and dazzle below on the Polish side, over to the Low Tatras and Mala Fatra in Slovakia. This is a wonderful mountain journey to be savoured.

Due to the remote location of the majority of mountains huts and lodges it is not possible to have daily luggage transfers on this trip. Therefore you will need to carry your personal clothing and equipment each day. A larger daypack of 40-50 litres should still suffice as you DO NOT need sleeping bags and camping mats in the lodges as bedding is provided and the walking distance between each is not great (approx 4 hours). However, it is possible to have a luggage transfer on day 4 at extra cost.
