Zambia Walking Safari - In Style

12 days, Guided, Minimum 2 People, Seasonal Daily Departures

South Luangwa is the jewel of the country's national parks, and lies in the northern-eastern part of Zambia, comprising some nine thousand square kilometres of unspoilt African wilderness.
Its wildlife is outstanding and you can expect to encounter numerous large animals both on foot and in open four-wheel drive vehicles, both during the day and under the cover of darkness: elephant, lion, baboon, warthog, zebra and wildebeest - to mention a few. This valley also probably has the world's highest naturally occurring population of leopard.
Walking safaris are relaxed and are tailored to your abilities and desires. They are usually based around a four-hour walk in the morning, including a tea break and a two-hour walk in the evening. A highly experienced guide and an armed scout will accompany all walking safaris. When not walking you can relax on your veranda and enjoy the African scenery whilst sipping a cocktail!
Days 1 and 2. Fly to Mfuwe
Fly via Lusaka or Lilongwe to the small airport at Mfuwe. On arrival you are transferred to Tafika.
Days 3 to 5. Tafika
Tafika is superbly situated just to the north of the Nsefu sector of the South Luangwa National Park on a magnificent stretch of the Luangwa River. It is in an exceptional wildlife area and offers quick, easy access to both the Nsefu sector and the park on the opposite (west) bank. Walking safaris are on offer, as well as daytime game drives, the famous Luangwa night drive and unique boating and canoeing safaris. You choose to suit your need. The camp consists of five comfortable grass and pole chalets each with en-suite facilities and caters for a maximum of ten guests. With so few guests the camp offers a highly personalised, friendly service and the game-viewing activities are very flexible. Lighting and refrigeration at the camp are solar powered.
Days 6 to 9. Chikoko
The two bush camps operate slightly upstream from Tafika on the opposite bank of the Luangwa. This is around the spot where David Livingstone crossed the river in 1866 and is still a beautiful corner of the valley with excellent game densities. There are no roads to these camps and all the luggage and supplies are carried in by porters. The first bush camp you stay in is the Chikoko Walking Camp, reached by a banana boat ride followed by a ten- minute walk. The simple grass-walled chalets are raised about three metres off the ground, and topped by a canvas shade to keep the sun off - also a great vantage point for spotting wildlife. The Crocodile Walking Camp is a further forty-minute walk down the river, overlooking a large and usually dry ox-bow lagoon. This is a great location and the three double chalets have en-suite flush toilet and shower open to the air. The guides are amongst the valley's most experienced - so nothing will be missed.
Days 10 and 11. Tafika to Lusaka
You walk back to Tafika for one more peaceful night before having to say goodbye to the wilderness and tranquillity of this haven of African life and flying to Lusaka for a final night in the city.
Day 12. Homeward
You fly back to the UK.
EXTENSION - North Luangwa National Park
4 days Cost per person from £1,095
Reached by a short light aircraft flight, you will be staying at the Mwaleshi camp in the remote Northern Park. This area has no permanent lodges and is a virtually unexploited wilderness in terms of safari. The comfortable bush camp (accommodating only six people) is constructed in a traditional grass and pole fashion on a beautiful stretch of the perennially flowing Mwaleshi River. There is no electricity in the camp, instead it uses paraffin lamps. The camp is in the heart of an area legendary for its abundant wildlife, lion in particular. Most of the game-viewing is conducted on foot and you are unlikely to see another soul!
