The snow covered peaks of the High Atlas

As the snow arrives on the peaks of the majestic High Atlas Mountains, not only does this present a landscape of scenic splendour but also great opportunities for winter hill-walking. As well as aiming to make a winter ascent of Jebel Toubkal (4167m), the highest summit in North Africa, the neighbouring peak of Ouanoukrim (4088m) is also a worthy objective.

Although Toubkal is of course the highest and thus most people's principle objective, many find that Ouanoukrim affords a more interesting climb. Certainly both afford equally spectacular views across the snow-covered High Atlas that on clear days can extend as far away as the Sahara. Whilst this trip does require the use of a walking ice-axe and crampons for both peak ascents and negotiating mostly moderately angled snow slopes, there is no technical climbing involved.

Day 1: Arrive Marrakech and rendezvous at the group hotel.
Day 2: Transfer to Aguersioual and then take an acclimatisation trek up and down two passes to Imlil.
Day 3: Follow the main route to Toubkal and trek via Sidi Chamarouch to Toubkal Base Camp and the Neltner Refuge. Practice ice-axe and crampon walking.
Day 4: Ascend Toubkal's neighbour- Ouanoukrim and enjoy the reward of fine summit views of the Atlas and Toubkal. Return to Neltner.
Day 5: Climb Toubkal and descend to Neltner.
Day 6: Descend to Imlil and then transfer to Marrakech, with time for last minute souvenir hunting in the souk and witness the spectacle of the Djeema El Fna.
