Wild West Mackenzie Trail
14 days - guided groups, fixed departures
- A journey along the route of the Gold Rush Heritage Trail
- Remote, rarely visited mountain terrain on the Chilcotin Plateau
- Exceptional wild flowers
This seldom-travelled area, deep in the wilderness of British Columbia's vast interior, is awaiting your discovery. Follow in the footsteps of the First Nations trading routes and the first Europeans to reach the Pacific Ocean.
From Vancouver, you will travel across the plateau to Rainbow Mountain trailhead through one of the most picturesque landscapes on earth. Land of bear and elk, the spirit of adventure, the "wild west" and some of the most majestic mountain vistas imaginable. The trip is supported by packhorses who will carry the supplies, as you explore the wild environment on foot. Camps are in the traditional locations of old local trappers and hunters. The remote route passes though the MacKenzie Valley, along the stunning Tweedsmuir and Octopus trails, passing by magnificent Mount MacKenzie. Weather permitting you may have views of the Coastal Mountains and with luck, have sightings of moose, caribou or mountain goats or perhaps even hear the elusive wolf. Bring your sense of adventure for river crossings and the rugged terrain!
The trip continues in beautiful Bella Coola valley, gateway to the "Great Bear Rainforest" and home to one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. Unique rock carvings and the Atnarko River await you, before returning to the exciting multi-cultural city of Vancouver, either with your guide or by choosing to extend your trip by ferry along the Discovery Coast Passage to Vancouver Island and onwards to the mainland by plane.
