This varied ‘Italian Job’ itinerary combines an explosive volcano walk to Mount Vesuvius, ancient history and culture and delightful walks along the Amalfi coast on the ‘Path of the Gods’.

From Naples use the Circumvesuviana to visit Ercolano before ascending world famous Vesuvius for a stunning panoramic view over the Bay of Naples. A visit to the ruins of Pompeii is a must before travelling to the striking Amalfi Peninsula. Here, from the delightful towns of Amalfi and Agerola, you’ll enjoy four days exploring the fascinating coastline with its rugged sea cliffs and picturesque villages, including a hike on the ‘Path of the Gods’ to the colourful town of Positano.

Walking through fragrant landscapes where natural beauty has inspired many artists and poets is an experience to savour.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fly to Naples

    Fly from the UK to Naples.

  2. Day 2: Take ‘Circumvesuviana’ to Ercolano & ascend Vesuvius

    Take the ’Circumvesuviana’, a narrow gauge railway that runs around the base of Vesuvius, to Ercolano. The first part of the ascent of Vesuvius is by bus. The bus stops some 200 metres short of the summit and from here it is around a 45-minute walk up to the volcanic crater at 1,281 metres. From the top you can look down into the crater and enjoy magnificent views of over the Bay of Naples. Descend once more and return to Ercolano by bus to continue your exploration of the archaeological ruins buried at the same time as Pompeii.

  3. Day 3: Visit Pompeii, then private transfer to Amalfi

    Take the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii to visit the largest archaeological site in the world. A great example of past human life, where the huge eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD caused over 16,000 inhabitants to be permanently frozen in ash. In the afternoon we will transfer you to Amalfi.

  4. Day 4: Maiori to Minori

    Your first experience walking along the ancient paths that link all of the Amalfi Coast towns is along the Lemon Trail which connects Maiori with the historic centre of Minori, the 'City of Taste'.

    Walking along the Lemon Trail, admire the vastness of the cultivated terraces, like brushstrokes of greenery lapping the blue of the sea. Enjoy the fresh scent of lemons which are grown using a special techniques, known as 'sfusato amalfitano'.

    Passing Minori, ascend towards the small village of Torello to the church of San Michele Arcangelo with its unique panorama of the sea. Finally, descend towards Atrani to return to Amalfi.

  5. Day 5: Ravello to Amalfi

    Catch a bus from Amalfi to the resort town of Ravello - a UNESCO heritage site and home to iconic cliffside gardens. The village overhangs the sea with views that stretch across the Gulf of Salerno and over the Cilento Mountains. Be sure to explore the 'City of Music' and its vibrant cultural scene.

    The route from Ravello to Pontone includes a nature trail with the background of the artistic buildings built in the era of the Duchy of Amalfi. Walk through the terraces up to the medieval village of Pontone. The last stretch continues through the Valley of Ferriere and dei Mulini where the ruins of old paper mills are scattered.

  6. Day 6: Amalfi to Agerola

    Walk along one of the oldest paths, the Via Maestra dei Villaggi, which connects the villages Pastena, Lone, Vettica and Tovere di Amafi to Agerola. The trail runs through terraced lemon groves and is carved from rock, offering wonderful panoramic coastal views.

    Holm oaks, carob and olive trees and strawberries line the streets that in turn line the limestone walls.

    Walking distance: 7 km | Ascent: 590 m | Descent: 60 m

  7. Day 7: Hike the ‘Path of the Gods’

    Your final day’s walk is following what is the most famous walk in the entire Amalfi region, ‘The Path of the Gods’. This wonderful, panoramic hike hugs and contours the coastline from above.

    During the course of the walk, the aroma of rosemary pervades. Both sides of the dramatic peninsula are visible - out to Capri on one side and the Gulf of Salerno on the other.

    Reaching Montepertuso, descend to the colourful and exceptionally attractive small town of Positano. The brightly painted houses are built into the natural amphitheatre created by the mountains rising above the sea, and with its small beach it is the ideal place to soak up the atmosphere.

    Walking distance: 10 km | Ascent: 110 m | Descent: 650 m 

  8. Day 8: Transfer to Naples & fly back to the UK

    Transfer to Naples airport for your flight back to the UK.
