Toubkal Ascent

9 days, Guided for 2 people or more, Year Round Daily Departures.

This tour has been designed to enable those of you who want to take on a bit more of a challenge than is offered by our Atlas Experience trek, and achieve the dizzy heights of North Africa's highest peak within a week's holiday.
It can be operated on any day of the year, although should only be attempted in the winter months by those experienced in the use of ice axe and crampons. There is also time for you to enjoy the sights, sounds and aromas of the majestic city of Marrakech.
Day 1. Outbound
Fly to Marrakech and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2. Marrakech
During this free day in Marrakech you may like to engage a local guide to give you a half day guided tour of the old city, its markets, museums and of course its shops! A 'siesta' is often taken in the early afternoon and later you may like to explore the markets alone or observe the activities in the main square from a rooftop cafe.
Day 3. Oukaimeden
You will transfer to the 'ski resort' of Oukaimeden (2700 metres) to meet your guide. Here you will find surprisingly flat, lush green valleys. After lunch you will start your acclimatisation with an ascent up to the pass of Tizi n'ou Attar (3100 metres), from where there are superb views down the upper Ourika valley. You return to the Chalet Refuge for the night
Days 4 to 6. To Mount Toubkal
Three days of walking takes you through delightful villages to the newly constructed refuge at the base of Mount Toubkal at 3200 metres. There will be opportunities to climb to the top of some other peaks along the way, and to enjoy and appreciate the peaceful lifestyle of the native mountain Berbers.
Day 7. Toubkal Ascent
The ascent of Toubkal (4167 metres) is a three-hour climb up a well-trodden track. During the winter months snow will cover some (or maybe all) of the route and ice axe and crampon experience will be essential. There is no rush and you can linger a while on the top, enjoying the fresh, clear air and some fine views towards the Sahara. You can descend to the valley via a different route after which it is a gentle 2 to 3 hour descent down the wide muletrail back to the village of Aremd.
Day 8. Marrakech
After breakfast you walk down to Imlil to rendezvous with your transport to Marrakech, where there will be time to enjoy a leisurely afternoon and a last look at the early evening activities that take place in the Djemma El Fna.
Day 9. Homeward
Fly back to the UK.
Mount Toubkal Ascent Five Day Special
The above trip is also available as a 'long weekend'. Fly to Marrakech for the night before transferring the next day to the roadhead in the Atlas Mountains at Imlil. Walk up to the base village of Aremd (1900 metres) and continue to the holy shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. After a picnic by the river you return to Aremd for the night. The following day you ascend back towards Mount Toubkal and the famous Neltner refuge at 3200 metres. Depending on fitness there may be time to climb some of the nearby peaks before settling down for the night ready for an early rise the next morning. Slowly climb to the summit of North Africa, Mount Toubkal at 4167 metres, a three hour climb up a well trodden track. Retrace your steps back to Aremd and Imlil and transfer back to Marrakech for the night.
