The Peloponnese - A Taste of the Mani

8 days, Self-Guided for 2 people or more, Seasonal Daily Departures, Centre-based

The Mani peninsula in the Peloponnese is a corner of Greece that is unspoilt and sparsely populated, with rugged mountains towering high above warm coastal waters. An area ideal for peaceful walking on the cobbled mule tracks amongst fabulous flora and fauna, from secluded sandy coves to the mighty Taygetos Mountains. Relax on sandy beaches and in the unassuming coffee shops and tavernas, surrounded by centuries of culture and traditional working communities. You will be based in the pretty coastal village of Kardamili, a tranquil centre from which to explore the various sights and hiking routes of the area. Enjoy the luxury of walking at your own pace in your own time, lingering to observe the butterflies and prolific birdlife, dawdle amidst the fields of wild orchids and relax in the clear, calm waters at numerous swimming spots. Enjoy fresh fish at a friendly local taverna and sample a late- night ouzo at one of the many small, intimate bars whilst drinking in the spectacular sunsets on the Mani's western face. A wonderful way to encounter a different side of Greece. Enjoy a walk in this tranquil corner of Olympia and experience the sights, sounds and smells which combine to produce a magic that is felt by all who visit - the magic of the Mani.
Day 1. Outbound
Fly to Kalamata, the olive growing capital of Greece, where you will be met and transferred over the mountains to the ancient merchant seaside village of Kardamili. A friendly family run 'studio' in the heart of the village will be your base for the coming week.
Days 2 and 3. Village Walks
Being based in one spot gives you the option of choosing from a 'menu' of walks best suited to your ability or needs. The following is a suggested outline and your hosts will be happy to advise a suitable itinerary. Thus you may start your holiday following a gentle graded, well-marked footpath between olive and almond fields, stopping at various hamlets to admire the old architecture and enjoying lengthy lunches at simple cafes. Take a pilgrim route from the preserved village of Milea to the important monastery of Panagia Iatrissa with magnificent views out to the distant Aegean Islands.
Day 4. Viros Gorge
Enjoy a day meandering in and out of the gorge along its dry river bed down to the sea. Absorb the absolute silence of the sheer walls as you clamber along some dramatic rock formations. A tough day but the refreshing swim at the end is your reward!
Days 5 and 6. Mountains and Coast
Take a bus high into the mountains and retrace your route via century old historical mule tracks and alpine villages past a rock chapel and castle winding down to the coast where the cool water springs meet the sea at the golden sandy beach of Kalogria.
Day 7. Cultural Activities
A free day to visit Kalamata's markets, the spectacular underground sea caves at Diros or the Byzantine hillside town of Mystras. Alternatively tackle the towering peak of Profitas Ilias (2400 metres) with a guide or merely relax on Kardamili beach.
Day 8. Homeward
Transfer back to Kalamata to fly home.
