The Heart of Austria

8 days, Self-Guided, Minimum 2 People, Daily May to October.

New for 2008

Austria is renowned for its superb hiking routes, varied scenery, equable climate and stunning floral display. Salzkammergut, just east of Salzburg, is situated in the most beautiful heart of its alpine region. The entire area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its rich green Alps, impressive rock faces plunging straight into the numerous crystal clear lakes and of course not forgetting the magnificent Dachstein Glacier. From our base in the delightful traditional village of Bad Ischl you can choose from an array of walks varying from gentle valley strolls to more challenging hikes.

Cable cars offer easy access to high pastures so you can enjoy being immersed in the mountain scenery without overly exerting yourself on any challenging ascents. With hundreds of marked trails in the area there is little chance of running out of choices - endless alpine meadows, pine forests, edelweiss-covered gorges and dramatic summits you will be surrounded by a real paradise of mountain peaks over 3000 metres high. Discover the delights of Salzkammergut at your own pace and enjoy the restorative calm of the mountains on this relaxing walking holiday.

Day 1. Outbound to Bad Ischl
Fly to Salzburg, Innsbruck or Munich where you will be met and transferred to the charming spa town of Bad Ischl - 'heaven on earth' according to Franz Josef I! Tuck into hearty Austrian fayre - the first of many!
Days 2 to 5. Self-guided Walks
Bad Ischl really is the perfect base with its panoramic stunning views and excellent public transport system. All of the walks in this area are well signposted and maps will be supplied locally. There are a variety of paths to choose from - circular walks starting from the village centre or one-way routes with easy returns by bus, train or even ferry. Follow the historic Brine Trail to Bad Goisern or the Pilgrim Path to St Wolfgang; take the cable car to Katrin and hike in the Postalm, Europe's second largest hiking paradise; or hike the Elisabeth Waldweg trail from the Emperor's Royal Villa. The length and grade of each walk can be decided by you and there are always plenty of friendly alpengasthofs or mountain restaurants en route so you can linger over a sachertorte and coffee. Return each evening to the warm hospitality and sumptuous meals at your hotel before exploring the evening bars the village has to offer.
Days 6 and 7. Optional Activities
The picturesque town of Hallstatt, perched on the hillside, is home to the famed salt mines. The ice caves of Obertraun at Dachstein-Krippenstein are nearby. You can take the steam train from the stunning Wolfgangsee to Schafberg or you may wish to take a day trip to Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace. Alternatively, relax and enjoy the daily concerts that take place in Bad Ischl, the former summer capital of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
Day 8. Homeward
Transfer back to your departure city for your flight home.
