The Apennine Explorer

8 days, Self-Guided for 2 people or more, Seasonal Weekly Departures, Centre-based, Self-drive

Enjoy the picturesque scenery of this unique unspoilt corner of the Italian countryside on a self-guided trip in Emilia Romagna. From your self-catering base not far from Tuscany, you will find a variety of delightful walks in the surrounding countryside. There is also the added bonus of the Italian culture including hilltop castles and churches dating from the 13th century. The warmth of your hosts is legendary - their hospitality always receives the highest praise. For complete independence a hire car is included. Below is a suggested itinerary for the week.
Day 1. Bedonia
Fly to Genoa or Bologna and drive to the small village of Bedonia. Depending on your arrival time you can either wander into town and explore the coffee bars and cake shops or enjoy one of the local walks around Bedonia. This can be a circular walk, which circumnavigates Bedonia in pleasant and often shaded woods, interspersed with meadows and mountain views. There are many local restaurants in which you can spend your first evening, if cooking is not on the cards immediately.
Days 2 to 5. Walking around Bedonia
Several walks start from the house, including a trail through chestnut trees and wildflower meadows to the top of Monte Pelpi. At the summit there are a spectacular 360 degree views of the surrounding area. You might consider visiting the wildlife sanctuary of Oasi dei Ghirardi, or the market and castle at Bardi. Alternatively you could go to Lago Lame for an easy walk through the nature reserve. For the more adventurous there are some steep challenging paths over the Passo di Etola or scrambling up the rocky ridge of Monte Penna.
Days 6 and 7. Coastal Walks
The 'Cinque Terre' is an exciting coastal walk through vineyards and olive groves with sweeping views of the coast and sea. Walking from village to village you have ample opportunity to sit and have lunch or a cool drink under the shades of the poplar trees. The attractive Portofino Peninsula is also worth a day exploring its many paths, with opportunities to swim in the clear, cool water.
Day 8. Homeward
Hopefully you will have time for another short walk through the countryside around Bedonia before driving back to the airport.
