Slovenia - Hiking in the Julian Alps
8 Days, Self-Guided, 2 People or more, Daily May to Oct
Journey to Slovenia with its wealth of history, rich mountain scenery, swathes of impossibly green forests through which equally impossibly green rivers course and endless outdoor opportunities - all in under two hour's flying time.
This self-guided trip allows you to experience the highlights of the fabulous Julian Alps based out of two stunning locations. First, the renowned alpine resort of Kranska Gora, the perfect starting point for northern approaches into the Alps and the magnificent Triglav National Park and secondly the lakeside village of Bohinj, on the southern flanks, with its dramatic backdrop of mountains, canyons, lake and waterfalls. A sense of peace and hospitality exists in the warm greetings and easy ambience you will find here.
Fantastic food, superb wine and breathtaking scenery combine to create a wonderful destination for outdoor enthusiasts far away from the crowds thronging the hills of other European countries. Slovenia has absorbed so much from the past and has so much to offer for the future. Go whilst this country remains relatively undiscovered!
- Day 1. Outbound to Kranska gora
- Fly to Ljbuljana and transfer via Lake Bled to the renowned alpine resort of Kranska gora, nestled in a cirque of mountain peaks.
- Days 2 and 3. Triglav National Park
- From nearby Martuljek village trek through a dramatic canyon, passing the two picturesque Martuljek waterfalls with the beautiful scenery of Triglav National Park providing a suitable background. Enjoy constant and magnificent views of the dramatic spire of Mount Spik. Trek over the Vratca col to the alpine meadows of the Sleme Plain and the gloriously secluded Tamar Valley and eye-popping Planica ski-jumps.
- Day 4. The Trenta Valley
- A free day to enjoy your surrounds. Take an optional trip up the ancient Vrsic Pass, the highest road in Slovenia, to the pass at 1200 metres. Continue to the beautiful Trenta Valley where you will hike to the spring of the emerald River Soca. Lunch in Bovec and try some adventurous activities before returning via the Boka and Kozjak waterfalls where you can jump from a 12 metre bridge.
- Days 5 and 6. From Lake Bohinj to Mount Visevnik
- Transfer round to scenic Lake Bohinj, the perfect base from which to explore the southern fringes of the Julian Alps. A cable car assists in the ascent Mount Vogel (1922 metres) for glorious views of the surrounding peaks. On your final day's trekking you will experience a third vantage point in the Julian Alps - the vast, tree-covered Pokljuka plateau. This is the traditional starting point of Triglav treks and a very popular Nordic skiing centre. A steep climb sees you summiting Mount Visevnik (2050 metres) for close views of Mount Triglav's sheer face.
- Days 7 and 8. Ljubuljana
- Transfer to Ljbuljana, Slovenia's lively capital and enjoy a full day in this charming and very relaxed city. Transfer back to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
