This itinerary has been specifically created for people wanting to experience the true beauty of its snow-capped volcanoes, dazzling turquoise alpine lakes, dense rainforests, creaking glaciers and remote, wild valleys. With the emphasis firmly on spending as much time on foot and as little time as possible on the road you will journey from North to South Islands through New Zealand's most beautiful natural scenery. In the North - the delightful Coromandel Peninsula with its unusual flora and fauna and magnificent Tongariro National Park with majestic steaming crater and sacred peaks. In the South - walk on ice on the fascinating Fox Glacier, fly into wild Mount Aspiring Park, explore Mount Cook with its incredible sparkling Blue Lakes and trek into the heart of the majestic Fiordland National Park on the famous Routeburn Track through the stunning Southern Alps, with its alpine peaks, passes and pastures, staying in comfortable rustic lodges. An inspirational alpine adventure!- Days 1 to 4. Outbound to North Island
- Fly to Auckland and transfer directly to the peaceful Coromandel Peninsula. A local secret, this surprising region offers quaint colonial townships, secluded beaches, native vegetation and the perfect pace of life to introduce you to the country. Enjoy guided walks exploring unique Kauri trees, extinct volcanoes and dazzling coastline.
- Days 5 to 7. Tongariro National Park
- Drive to the World Heritage Area of Tongariro National Park via the Waimangu Thermal Valley where you can wander along crater walkways and view amazing volcanic activity and thermally adapted plants. At Tongariro visit ancient battle sites and walk in native forest before embarking on the famous 'Tongariro One Day Crossing'. This takes you onto one of the world's most dramatic plateau offering phenomenal vantage points of volcanoes, pristine rainforest and sparkling emerald lakes.
- Days 8 to 10. South Island
- Drive to the centre of geo-thermal activity and Maori culture at Rotorua before flying to the South Island and the West Coast glaciers. Take a unique hike on the Fox Glacier where you can experience the wonderful sensation of being able to walk on ice as crampon attachments enable you to explore the fascinating ice formations with ease. Continue down South Westland and climb through native forests to the bushline of Mount Shrimpton for breathtaking views of the Southern Alps.
- Day 11. Mount Aspiring National Park
- An exhilarating and thrilling experience - fly into remote Mount Aspiring National Park for an unforgettable walk through Siberia Valley before returning on a jet-boat back to civilisation. On to Queenstown, a picturesque lakeside town surrounded by mountains and known as the capital of adrenalin activities!
- Days 12 to 14. The Routeburn Track
- Internationally renowned as a magnificent alpine adventure and one of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Routeburn Track follows a historic route over 41km through two World Heritage Areas. Trek beneath magnificent peaks, over alpine passes, through dense rainforest and out onto open pastures, past deep green lakes and torrential waterfalls, hopping over moss covered boulders and fern-lined streams and relaxing each night in comfortable rustic lodges. The only way to experience the unforgettable landscape of Fiordland.
- Days 15 and 16. Mount Cook
- Drive to Mount Cook National Park past the unbelievably aquamarine Blue Lakes and trek alongside the Tasman Glacier under the imposing icy summit of Mount Cook. Take the scenic route over the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch for a celebration dinner in this charming and quintessentially English city.
- Days 17 and 18. Homeward
- Depart New Zealand and return overnight to the UK.
