Nanda Devi Quest

19 days Guided Groups, Fixed Departures

This absolutely superb trek follows in the footsteps of the enigmatic explorers, Shipton and Tilman, to the spectacular and unfrequented area west of Nanda Devi, the Garhwal. Besides traversing the huge bowl in the hills known as the 'outer sanctuary', the high point is undoubtedly the Kuari Pass, with its views of many of the Garhwal's major peaks, but this is not all that this trek has to offer. Untouched villages, alpine pastures and dense virgin forests all combine to make this the classic trek in the Garhwal. The trek is not a difficult one, considering how close it gets to the mountains and follows trails almost unknown to western trekking groups, which for many people will add to its attraction. It is a rare combination of a classic trek along solitary trails.
Days 1 and 2. Outbound
Depart from the UK for Delhi. There will be a sightseeing tour of the old city before boarding the overnight sleeper express to Hardwar.
Days 3 and 4. Rishikesh/Lohjung
A short road transfer takes you to Rishikesh, a traditional starting point for great pilgrimages to the mountain temples of the Garhwal. You will be able to observe the devout pilgrims performing their evening prayers by the holy river Ganges before continuing onto your first overnight camp with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
Days 5 to 10. The Nandakini Valley
Set off along terraced hillsides and through conifer forests. The majority of the walk is along the ridge which, whilst providing excellent views, also has vibrant flora. Two days are spent at Bednibugyal to acclimatise and ridge at Kalwavinayak (4091 metres) for further fantastic views. Descend along the great explorers' route into the beautiful Nandakini Valley, winding through dense forest of Rhododendron and Silver Oak, cultivated terraces and occasional villages.
Days 11 to 15. Over the Kuari Pass!
The trail now takes you across valleys and over ridges, alternating between stretches of meadow and forest. From the Sartholi Kharak there are wonderful 180 degree views of the Garhwal Himalayas. Crossing several high passes the walk finally reaches the Kuari Pass, at 3697 metres. Almost the whole of the Garhwal Himalaya is now in view - the great Badrinath group of peaks to the north, and to the west the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, with Nanda Devi seeming deceptively close!
Days 16 and 17. Gorson to Dehra Dun
A short walk brings you to Auli, home to India's longest ski slopes, where your transport awaits you for the drive to Rudraprayag. From here it is possible to see the spectacular confluence of the rivers Nandakini and Alaknanda. The following day a long drive brings you back to Dehra Dun. The afternoon is free for local exploration.
Days 18 and 19. Homeward
After taking the early train to Delhi, the day is yours. Transfer to the airport for your homeward flight.
