For those looking for some decent walking with a little bit of luxury attached, we can now offer a more upmarket version of our most popular trip, 'The Atlas Experience'. The riads of Marrakech are well known for their luxurious decor offering a haven of tranquillity in traditional surroundings but there has always been a lack of suitable establishments available amongst the walking trails - until now.Using our personal experience and local knowledge, our Morocco experts have devised the following itinerary, staying at a variety of unique and inviting establishments in the hills and valleys of the Atlas Mountains, culminating with a sojourn in one of the famous riads out on the coast in Essaouira; an exotic dip into Moroccan culture.
- Days 1 and 2. Outbound
- Fly to Marrakech and relax in the salubrious surroundings of one of our preferred riads or a 5-star hotel allowing a full day to enjoy the delights of this ever-fascinating and colourful city.
- Days 3 to 6. Trek to Imlil
- From Marrakech you transfer high into the Atlas Mountains where from your cosy rustic chalet you can watch the sun rise over the nearby peaks before embarking on your trek. After an acclimatisation walk, you cross passes and ascend (optional) peaks, as you progress from valley to valley following ancient mule tracks through remote landscapes.
At Tachedirt you stay in the brand new Berber designed and funded 'Tigmi de Tachedirt', rustic luxury in a stunningly peaceful and spectacular setting. On arrival at Imlil you will be welcomed at 'the country's first and foremost mountain retreat', the impressive Kasbah de Toubkal. This is an extraordinary venture, not a hotel in the traditional sense, more 'an extension of the hospitality' that stems from the home of the Berbers who run it. Two nights here give you the opportunity to experience this sanctuary and it's hamman whilst also allowing for a good day walk to the holy shrine at Sidi Chamharouch, en-route to Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. - Days 7 and 8. The Azzaden Valley
- From Imlil you will trek to the spectacular valley of Azzaden and the Kasbah's sister establishment, the Toubkal Lodge. This is newly built, allowing trekkers to stay in complete comfort under traditional wooden ceilings and behind beautifully carved doors. A downhill walk the following day leads you through the nature reserve protecting the local Barbary sheep to Wirgane and the delightfully named 'Au Sanglier qui Fume' or 'The Smoking Boar'.
- Days 9 and 10. Essaouira
- You will transfer to the coast and the charming coastal fishing village of Essaouira, a former Portuguese enclave offering the Atlantic coast, open-air restaurants and a sunny climate. Here the delightful and renowned Riad Al Madina is an ideal location to rest from your travels with its peaceful rooftop terrace from which to enjoy the cool onshore breezes and the sound of the fishermen unloading their catch - the freshest sardines in the world!
- Days 11 and 12. Homeward
- Return for one last night in Marrakech before flying home after 12 days of Morocco truly 'In Style'. Business class flights, extensions and upgrades available - please contact us for ideas and information.
