13 days | From £625 | Guided group departures
- Climb M'Goun one of Morocco's highest summits
- Atmospheric trekking in the Central Atlas
- Spectacular canyons and gorges
This trek is ideal for those who've previously climbed Toubkal and are looking for more(but different) trekking in the wonderful Atlas Mountains range. With only Toubkal and Ouanoukrim higher, the summit of M'goun (4068m) in the Central Atlas affords expansive views over to the High Atlas and the seemingly infinite spread of desert to the south.
Our route has been especially created by "Mr. Morocco", Walks Worldwide founder Mike Wynne, to provide discerning trekking through this mountainous region of charming villages, high plateaux, canyons and gorges. A land of nomadic shepherds. An informed ascent and traverse of the M'goun massif is the ultimate highlight followed by an ingenious exit route to the fringes of the Jebel Sahro before finally returning to exotic Marrakech.
Why not extend your holiday by adding one of our exciting Morocco Extensions to enhance your experience in this amazing country.
- Day 1
- Arrive Marrakech and rendezvous at the group hotel.
- Day 2
- An overland transfer with a stop along the way for a scenic picnic lunch to Abachkou.
- Day 3
- Today we begin our trek into the Central Atlas towards the massif of M'Goun to Tirsal.
- Day 4
- The stronger trekker may wish to make the optional ascent of Jebel Rat today as we trek to Tizi n Iblouzan.
- Day 5
- Trek from Tizi n Iblouzan to Amerzi via the summit of Tignousti (3820m), and the spectacular village of Ichebakan
- Day 6
- Today you make a steep but well graded ascent the Tarchedit Plateau which is inhabited by nomads and their camels during the summer months. Camp is at Tarkaddiyt.
- Day 7
- In the summer months the peak of Jebel Mgoun (4068 m) is an increasingly popular summit to be claimed by trekkers in the area. It can be likened to a hard day in the Lakes or Scotland with its 'three-summit' ridge surpassing anything to be found 'at home'. In the summer the trekking route has the most fantastic of views of the Jebel Sahro Mountains to the east and the Atlas to the north and west. If conditions do not allow a summit attempt, it is still a good day's walk across the Oumsoud pass to attain the upper reaches of the Mgoun River, followed by a descent to Oulilimt.
- Days 8 to 10
- For the next four days you follow the course of the Mgoun River as it flows south to the Dades valley. The river at times passes through some spectacular gorges through which, water level permitting, you will walk. These are four days in one of the most beautiful of areas that can be experienced anywhere in the world. In the unlikely event of bad weather and potentially high water levels we have allowed time for an alternative, higher level route to be followed. The gorges provide the perfect habitat for some unique bird life, ranging from the golden eagle and griffin vulture to the beautiful ringdove.
- Day 11
- Arriving at the roadhead in the Dades Valley, we now transfer overland to soend the night in Ouarzazate.
- Day 12
- Back across the High Atlas by road to Marrakech, where there should be plenty of time for last minute souvenir hunting in the labyrinth of souks.
- Day 13
- Depart Marrakech.
