Mera Peak

26 days Guided Groups, Fixed Departures

New for 2008

Mera Peak (6654 metres) is the highest 'trekking peak' in Nepal. It is a challenging and dramatic route into the seldom visited Makalu Barun National Park. The summit offers panoramic views of many of the great Himalayan peaks including Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Kanchenjunga. It is not a technical climb although training in crampon-assisted glacier travel will be given en route and a careful acclimatisation schedule aids summit success.

From Lukla, in the heart of the Khumbu/Everest region, you trek through the isolated Inkhu Valley, through forests, alpine meadow and yak pastures. Over glacial terrain you make a steep ascent to Khare and on to Base Camp at 5400 metres. After practising mountain skills you ascend to High Camp on the edge of the Mera Glacier. Crampons, ice-axe and rope assist the final summit push to the central peak. Spectacular 360 degree views reward you!

Mera Peak is often classed as the most rewarding nontechnical climb anywhere in the world with constant unsurpassable views to accompany your every metre of ascent. For those who are looking to expand their mountain experience and push themselves a little to attain higher goals this is the expedition for you.

Days 1 to 3. Outbound
Depart UK to arrive in Kathmandu the following day. Enjoy the exotic, temples, palaces and colourful streets of this chaotic and vibrant city.
Days 4 to 9. Valleys and Ridges
Take the spectacular flight to Lukla (2827 metres) and commence your trek by descending towards the chalky Dudh Kosi River. Contour the valleys through bamboo forest and terraced fields following old trading routes. Village entrances are marked by mani walls and colourful prayer flags. The pace will be leisurely with roughly 4-7 hours of trekking each day. Nightly camps will be set at sensible increments allowing you to gradually acclimatise as well as enjoy the impressive mountain scenery.
Days 10 and 11. Buddhist Ceremony
A fantastic view of Mera Peak greets you from the Hinku Dranka but don't be too alarmed by the sheer walls of its southern face as you will be ascending from the north! Near the yak herders' settlement of Gondishung a religious ceremony takes place to ensure safety in the mountains. Two days at Tagnac (4400 metres) allow for acclimatisation with breathtaking views of the Mera La.
Days 12 to 17. Acclimatisation and Training
Climb glacial moraine beneath the dramatic face of Charpati Himal to Base Camp. During your time here there will be instruction in the use of crampons, ice-axe and rope technique as well as an acclimatisation walk up onto the Mera La. High Camp is usually at around 5800 metres (6 to 7 hours from Base Camp) where you overnight before the final summit push.
Day 18. Summit Day!
Depart very early in the morning. The final day will take anything between four and six hours depending on group strength, snow and weather conditions. Willpower and stamina are required especially for the crevasse field and last steep push for which you will be roped up but the incredible feeling of achievement atop this 6654 metre giant will remain a lifetime memory. The view from the summit is utterly incredible! Four of the world's five highest peaks, stand out above hundreds of other, 'lesser' giants. You are now in the realm of the Mountaineer.
Days 19 to 22. Descent
Descend back to Khare and Tagnac and down to the Dudh Khosi valley. A final steep descent from the Zatra Og brings you back to Lukla. A celebratory meal with your Sherpas brings this memorable experience to an end.
Days 23 to 26. Kathmandu and Homeward
Fly back to Kathmandu for some serious rest and relaxation - and shopping! Return to UK.
