Hungary has witnessed so many changes in the past yet is now firmly on its way to establishing itself as a top European destination. The Nature Reserve of Bukk is one of the most beautiful forums for Hungarian nature - wild flowers, vineyards, ancient forests, waterfalls, lakes and varying animal life - as well as prehistoric relics, splendid castles and traditional villages that will plunge you into the local culture of gypsies and Magyar warriors along with their rich gastronomy and wines! The itinerary leads you to various fascinating Hungarian cities, from Budapest to Eger and on to Miskolc Tapolca, home to one of the most typical thermal spas in Hungary.
This is an ideal jaunt into one of Central Europe's most intact natural areas. Benefit from a change of scenery - go and experience Hungary!
- Day 1 and 2. Outbound
- Fly into the historically important capital of Budapest and take a wander through the ancient heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Site centred on the banks of the Danube. Journey by rail to the fortified riverside city of Eger, a hotbed of folk culture where there are always numerous street artists performing dances and songs in the pedestrianised cobbled alleyways where you can also enjoy a glass of 'Bull's Blood' - the famous local red wine.
- Days 3 and 4. Bukk National Park
- Exit the city to the world of Hungarian countryside, through an area famous for its watermelons and superb vineyards. The luxuriant vegetation of Bukk National Park greets you - beech, hornbeam, fir and oak forests full of wild boar and the shy moufflon. From the charming wine- producing village of Nosvaj you make your way through a luxuriantly wooded zone containing prehistoric caves and small lakes (fresh trout for supper?) to the valley of Szalajka and its beautiful 'waterfall staircase'. Overnight in the famous Lippizans horse-breeding centre of Szilvasvarad.
- Days 5 and 6. Lillafured
- Hop on the small train for an hour's journey through bicentennial forests before striding out once more, keeping a watchful eye for the eagles and falcons which populate the area. Continue eastwards crossing an astonishing karstic area with panoramic views of Lillafured's fairy-tale castle overhanging a reflective lake. Join the swans on the water and hire a boat, visit the local caves full of impressive stalactites or relax in front of the beautiful cascades flowing under the castle.
- Days 7 and 8. Miskolc Tapolca and Homeward
- Complete your journey through the natural and cultural folklore of Hungary by ending at the charming village of Miskolc Tapolca with its famed thermal baths where you can rest from your week's excursion in the therapeutic waters. Return to Budapest by train and fly home. Optional extension in either Miskolc Tapolca or Budapest available on request.
