Himalayan Heights & Tiger Trails
21 days Guided Group, Fixed Departures or Self Guided - Daily, Oct - March
Northern India - the serenity of the magnificent Himalayan peaks, the wildlife, flora and fauna of the lush National Parks, the stunning scenery, bustling cities and deserted mountain walks, the colour, the tastes, the smells but above all the beauty and uniqueness of this still uncommercialised area - this is what you can look forward to on this varied and fascinating trip. We have combined the richness of Delhi and Agra with the peace of the Garhwal Mountains, the bustle of the Indian trains with the simplicity of camping at 3500 metres, and the thrill of viewing the major peaks such as Nanda Devi (7916 metres) with the awe-inspiring sight of the Taj Mahal.
The trekking is simply magnificent - being slightly set back from the mountains you gain wide-sweeping vistas and also enjoy the contrast between green, forested peaks and dazzling white glacier covered summits. All the joys of mountaineering without the associated dangers and altitude problems. Add some exploration (and hopefully tigers!) in the jungle areas of Corbett National Park, visits to famous pilgrim centres such as Rishikesh on the Ganges and trekking through remote villages on mountain trails unknown to many Westerners and you have a perfect introduction to this diverse and intriguing country.
- Days 1 to 3. Outbound
- Fly to the vibrant city of Delhi. Continue to Agra, home to the beautiful and famous monument to love, the Taj Mahal. You will also visit the Agra Fort and the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri, a hauting complex of empty palaces and mosques before taking the overnight train north.
- Days 4 and 5. Corbett National Park
- This famous park is particularly scenic, attracting wildlife including wild elephants, leopards, Himalayan bears and of course tigers. Head off on safari in an open jeep, enjoying the varied vegetation that is also home to many species of birds. Head towards the mountains to Kausani, atop a narrow ridge with glorious 320 kilometre wide panoramic vistas of the High Himalayas including Nanda Devi (7916 metres).
- Days 6 to 11. Trekking amidst the High Peaks
- From Lohjung (2000 metres) you embark on your trek through bamboo, dramatic valleys, dense forest and along rocky escarpments and lush silky grass plateaux to Bednibugyal at 3500 metres, the most magnificently situated camping spot where you spend an acclimatisation day surrounded by 7000 metre peaks including Trishul. Descend to Wan and Kuling villages for time with the local people. Here the villagers weave their own blankets as well as dance and sing traditional folk songs.
- Days 12 to 15. Brahmtal Lake
- On emerging from the Rhododendron and Silver Oak forest you will find yourself in the high open meadows filled with fantastic displays of Himalayan flowers. Idyllic campsites (a paradise for birdwatchers) amidst 200 year old Deodar trees, with the snowy peaks as a backdrop make excellent bases from which you can enjoy exploratory days walking along the ridges. Witness 180?? views of the Himalayas from a shepherd's camp at Vikaltal, perched high at 2700 metres and wind your way up to stunning Brahmtal Lake (3200 metres). A rest day here gives you the opportunity to experience breathtaking mountain views and unbelievable sunrises and sunsets over the snow-capped tops.
- Days 16 to 18. The Ganges and Rishikesh
- Transfer to Kaudiyala and a peaceful rafters camp on the banks of the holy river Ganges. Time to relax by the river before rafting down to the celebrated spiritual centre of Rishikesh (road transfer also available). ??This is the traditional starting point for great pilgrimages to the mountain temples of the Garhwal and you will be able to observe the devout pilgrims performing their evening prayers by the river in colourful ceremonies.
- Days 19 to 21. Dehra Dun, Delhi and Homeward
- A visit to the pilgrim centre of Hardwar before a final feast at a local family's home in the colonial town of Dehra Dun. An overnight train journey brings you back to Delhi where there is time for a city tour before flying back to the UK.
