Guatemala-Highland Explorer
13 days, Guided Groups, Fixed Departures
Why Guatemala? Guatemala is a stunningly beautiful and fascinating destination for travellers offering world class UNESCO Mayan archaeology sites, colonial towns, a strong indigenous Indian culture, diverse scenery with 33 volcanoes from desert to rainforest and prolific wildlife and birds.
Hiking in Guatemala will give you an intimate view of the land and its people and a chance to absorb the surroundings in close proximity. Highland walks take you through incredible beautiful scenery, remote Mayan villages and atop towering volcanoes for sweeping vistas of this enigmatic country.
This region offers magical hiking through dense mountain rainforest and a chance to spot, amongst numerous other bird species, the elusive Quetzal. The famous market town of Chichicastenango and the equally famous temple ruins at Tikal offer an insight into past and present Mayan culture.
This is a bewitching, compact country on the cusp of a tourism explosion, offering a real adventure challenge with outstanding rewards.
- Day 1 to 3. Outbound to Antigua
- Depart the UK and fly overnight to Guatemala City. Transfer to the nearby elegant colonial town of Antigua with its exquisite 16th century architecture, cobbled streets and squares. Nestled beneath three towering volcanoes Antigua is an excellent base from which to hike amongst the evergreen forests and farmland surrounding the town. Ascend Pacaya Volcano (2552 metres) at the top of which you can look down into the crater to watch the lava and experience the energy of this very live volcano!
- Days 4 and 5. Volcano Hiking
- Deep in the heart of the highlands is the spectacular Zunil mountain range where the hike along the Alaska Ridge offers stunning views of as many as 10 volcanoes at the same time, as well as Pacific cloud forest and lush valleys. Hike around Cerro Quemado (Burnt Peak), one of 33 volcanoes in Guatemala, passing local people cultivating its volcanic slopes and visit the impressive market of Almolonga where the produce is eventually sold.
- Days 6 to 8. Lake Atitlan Trekking
- Chichicastanango boasts a fantastic array of intricate and colourful crafts and on market days is awash in a sea of traditional costumes as Mayan indigenous people from the surrounding villages descend to sell their wares. Wander through this huge market, bartering for artisan pieces before embarking on a further highland hike which brings you down to the shores of the sublime Lake Atitlan where a short boat transfer brings you to your lakeside hotel. What better way to arrive at Santiago Atitlan, situated on the edge of what many call 'the most beautiful lake in the world'? It is indeed an amazing setting with its crystal blue waters surrounded by three lofty volcanic peaks. This is a fabulous place for hiking and you will enjoy a variety of day walks including the sacred Cerro de Oro (1800 metres) where you can often witness Mayan rituals in progress and Atitlan volcano with its coffee plantations, pine and cloud forests replete with more than 250 species of birds.
- Days 9 to 11. Rainforest and Tikal Mayan Ruins
- Fly to Flores in the northern rainforest area of the Peten, home to thousands of archaeological sites and a myriad of exotic wildlife. Hike deep into the jungle to the Mayan temple of Yazha, situated on the shores of a peaceful lake, with its twin pyramid complex offering a rather unusual but excellent platform for birdwatching. Finally spend a full day exploring the spectacular site of Tikal, the largest and most impressive Mayan site yet uncovered. Over 3,000 separate temples and shrines tower over the jungle canopy and sensational views can be gained from climbing their height.
- Days 12 and 13. Homeward
- Return to Guatemala City and connect with your overnight flight home
- Optional Copan (Honduras) Extension
- For those with an interest in Mayan culture why not extend your journey to the world famous site of Copan, just over the border into Honduras. Often called the 'Paris' of the Mayan world, Copan is renowned for its intricate carvings, sculptures and hieroglyphics. As well as the ruin site the pretty colonial town itself has an excellent museum, bird park and is a quiet and atmospheric place to wander round. Return on Day 14 to Guatemala City and fly back to the UK arriving on Day 16.
