The Coastal Way - or Caminho da Costa - is a stunning route of the classic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, following the Atlantic coast towards Santiago de Compostela.

The Coastal Way starts in the seaside town of Baiona, located in the heart of R’ Baixas. From Baiona you will follow the coast towards Vigo, marvel at the views of the magnificent Illas Cies and the bays along the way.

Discover the wild Atlantic beauty and sandy beaches of Northern Portugal and Galicia, taste delicious seafood and wine, stay in fishing villages and feel refreshed by the maritime feel of our Coastal Camino.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Travel to Baiona

    Fly to Santiago de Compostela airport and make your way (by bus) to Baiona.

    Visit the Monte Real Castle, stroll along the port, and enjoy the delicious seafood and Albarino white wine for which the region is famous.

  2. Day 2: To Vigo

    Follow the coastal route from Baiona to Nigran and on to Vigo. Enjoy stunning views of the Bay of Vigo and the magnificent Illas Cies and its National Park.

  3. Day 3: To Redondela

    Follow the coastal Camino path and enjoy views of the Bay of Vigo as you walk to Redonela.

    Walking distance: 15 km | Ascent: 350 m | Descent: 350 m

  4. Day 4: To Ponteverda

    Follow the coastal trail via the fishing village Arcade, making a stop to try the famous oysters, then onto Pontevedra and explore the old town.

    Walking distance: 20 km | Ascent: 350 m | Descent: 350 m

  5. Day 5: To Caldas de Reis

    Heading inland, walk through the chestnut groves, pine and eucalyptus woods, passing the hamlet of Tivo with its lovely fountain and onto Caldas de Reis.

    Walking distance: 21 km | Ascent: 240 m | Descent: 240 m

  6. Day 6: To Padron

    Hike across the River Umia and hot springs at Caldas de Reis and through forest as it climbs to the village of Santa Marina, before trekking through the pine forest of Padron.

    Walking distance: 18 km | Ascent: 270 m | Descent: 280 m

  7. Day 7: To Santiago de Compostela

    Trek through villages to the historical sanctuary of A Esclavitude, past the ruins of Castro Lupario and towards Agro dos Monteiros to complete your pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

    Walking distance: 25 km | Ascent: 450 m | Descent: 200 m

  8. Day 8: Explore Santiago de Compostela & fly back to the UK

    Time permitting, explore the vibrant old town of Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage City, before departing on your flight back to the UK.

Please note: Due to on-going renovations, Pilgrim Mass and other religious services will now take place in nearby churches across Santiago Old Town and not in Santiago Cathedral. Please see mass times and locations on your trip dossier. The Cathedral will still remain open to Pilgrims and visitors with restricted access.
