Borneo - Twin World Heritage Walk

17 days Guided, Minimum 2 People, Seasonal Daily Departures

Sarawak, Sabah, Borneo - the very names conjure up thoughts of wild mountains, remote jungles, humid forest, indigenous tribes, abundant birdlife and Orang-utans - an utter paradise for those in search of tropical wilderness. Our Borneo trip covers the only two Natural World heritage sites in Malaysia ??? Mount Kinabalu and Mulu National Parks. The mighty Mount Kinabalu (4101 metres) is better known but the Mulu National Park in north-east Sarawak boasts the most extensive limestone cave system in the world and has one of the richest assemblages of plants and animals. Staying in local villages, nature resorts and native longhouses, this is a trip for those with a passion for walking in the tropics and an interest in the incredible exotic wildlife this fabulous island has to offer.
Days 1 and 2. Outbound
Fly to Miri, Sarawak and transfer to your beachside hotel where you enjoy a luxurious spa, a leisurely beachside stroll and a spectacular sunset to refresh you after the long flights.
Days 3 to 5. Mulu National Park
A short flight takes you to the World Heritage site of Mulu National Park, your base for the next three days. A delightful combination of walks (both on the ground, under the ground and 'skywalks'), river cruises and cave visits for the first couple of days culminates with a strenuous and challenging trek to ascend Gunung Api (2376 metres) to see the spiny Pinnacles.
Day 6. Kuala Mendalam
A five-hour trek along the "Headhunters Trail" takes you through the lush rainforest and across monkey bridges, before transferring by boat to Mentawai Park HQ. From here you walk to a village near Kuala Mendalam where the local community welcome you as guests by staying in a traditional longhouse.
Days 7 to 10. Mount Kinabalu
Transfer to Kinabalu National Park, packed full of incredible biodiversity. You will walk between huge trees with buttress roots under a canopy festooned with creepers, ferns and orchids. The summit of Mount Kinabalu is reached at sunrise on the third day in the Park, after a steep but rewarding climb. Surrounded by butterflies, endemic birds and unsurpassable views it is a truly exhilarating experience. You descend on the Mesilau trail and proceed to the medicinal waters of the Poring Hot Springs. A final walk follows the Marakau Track, with spectacular views of Mount Kinabalu, to Muruk village and on to the nearby Sabah Tea Garden. This is one of the few organic certified tea plantations in the world and you will be able to view the tea production and sample a cup or two!
Day 11. Orang-utans
The Orang-utan is the only great ape found outside Africa and here you can see some of these semi-wild, ginger apes feed and leap through the canopy. Time to relax and enjoy the surroundings or learn more about the Orangutan rehabilitation programme.
Day 12. Selingan Island / Sukau
Take a boat over to Selingan, one of the turtle islands of the Pulau Penyu National Park. Here you will see either the green or the hawksbill turtles laying their eggs as they painstakingly haul themselves up the beach - a heroic feat. [Early booking is essential to secure the Selingan trip due to limited accommodation]. Alternatively, you can enjoy a wildlife-viewing cruise from the riverside Proboscis Lodge. This area is rich in plants and wildlife, and it is possible to see elephants, crocodile, Sumatran rhinoceros and many species of bird. A late afternoon cruise will reveal many proboscis monkeys when they converge on tree tops by the river banks to settle for the night.
Days 13 to 15. Danum Valley
This conservation area is 43 sq km of pristine wilderness, where you will walk along the trails surrounded by a cacophony of noise produced by the insects, birds, frogs and monkeys that inhabit the jungle. If lucky you might spot an elephant, a flying squirrel or maybe a leopard. Ending your trip with two nights in the luxury of the Borneo Rainforest Lodge will give you endless photos and memories of a truly amazing country. After a final jungle walk to Coffin Cliff and the Jacuzzi pools, you transfer to Kota Kinabalu for the last night.
Days 16 and 17. Homeward
Transfer to the airport and return to the UK after a truly mind-enhancing holiday in Malaysian Borneo!
