Bhutan - Dzongs and the Druk
16 days Guided, Minimum 2 People, Seasonal Daily Departures and special 'Thimpu Festival' departure
Unveiled from the shroud of mystery and mysticism when the country was 'opened' a few years ago, Bhutan contains a paradise of wilderness with Himalayan peaks, beautiful valleys and untouched wildlife, with many plant species unidentified, as well as the magnificent Dzongs (fortresses) and monasteries. The famous Druk Path takes you through the heart of this majestic kingdom. It is a spectacular country and an enchanting destination which will leave you inspired by its beauty, landscapes, colourful people and deep-rooted traditions.- Days 1 to 3. Outbound via Kathmandu
- Fly to Kathmandu and stay at a delightful top class hotel.
- Day 4. Paro
- The flight to Bhutan rates as one of the most breathtaking in the world as you pass the Himalayan range seeing the world's ten highest peaks including Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga. Arrive into the enchanting valley of Paro, with its pine-covered hills and prayer-flag clad farmhouses nestled amongst the paddy fields.
- Days 5 to 8. The Druk Path
- This magnificent trek takes you through thick alpine forest and dwarf rhododendron shrubs up to a hilltop with views of the whole tranquil Paro valley with Mount Chomolhari (7329 metres) looming majestically in the distance. On clear days the views of the jagged snow-capped mountains and deep valleys are out of this world. You will walk along on the edge of pristine blue lakes where the great ice peaks reflect their glory. The walking is excellent in this area with gradual climbs and the occasional steep descent with rewarding views of Bhutan's stunning highest mountain, Mount Gankhar Punsum (7520 metres). Descend through blue pine forest to Thimphu.
- Days 9 to 13. Dzongs
- On our scheduled departure you will be able to attend the Thimpu Festival on Day 9. Thimphu is famous for its mediaeval Tashichhodzong Painting School, Traditional Medicine Institute, Folk Heritage Museum and National Library which houses the world's largest book and many ancient Buddhist manuscripts. Drive over the Dochula Pass (3100 metres) offering tantalising glimpses of the eastern Himalaya range to the ancient capital of Punakha with its restored Dzong. Here you take a day hike to the splendid Khamsung Yuelay Namgyal Chorten. The trip culminates in visits to the historical Drugyal Dzong in the Pa Chu, Kyichu Lhakhang Monastery, built in 659AD and one of the holiest places in Bhutan, the 17th century Ta Dzong (now the National Museum) and Rinpung Dzong (now a monastic community). Finally, you will hike to the famous cliff-hugging Taktshang Gompa or Tiger's Nest Monastery.
- Days 14 to 16. Homeward
- You return to Paro and fly back to Kathmandu. Enjoy a final full day here, before flying back to the UK. Options are available to enjoy an extension to Royal Chitwan National Park and rafting on the Seti River.
